Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: G3/233
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I have an early Apple monitor on a used G3 that's giving me a problem in Photoshop 5.0. If I scan a greyscale image the entire display goes greyscale even if I switch from photoshop to the finder the greyscale overrides the colour. THe monitor is set to Millions of colours at 832x624 resolution. Is this a video memory problem? Did the guy I get this from strip the memory? Is it a setting problem or a bug in Photoshop 5.0.? Oh B.T.W. the scanner is a Umax.

Paul,
What is probably happening is that Photoshop is using the palette created by the scanner software. That is, the picture is greyscale and so all the colors in the palette for that picture are shades of grey. When photoshop loads this, it switches the color palette for the whole machine to the palette for the picture. If Photoshop doesn't switch the palette back to the system palette when you switch to another application (like the Finder), the palette remains in greyscales.

This could be considered either a "feature" or a "bug" depending on how you think about this. Apparently, Photoshop isn't switching the palette.

As an experiment you can try saving the image as a .pict and open it with SimpleText. Then switch to the finder and see if the color palette changes the same way. I suspect it won't act the same way as with Photoshop.

BTW, since you're able to set it to Millions of colors at 832X624 you can be sure that it has enough video memory to display it. (You're not missing any video memory).

Thanks for using NoWonder,

DaveK
