My iBook suddenly went dark as if it were sleeping. I tried to wake it to no avail. I turned it off, and when I turned it on, I only heard the fan No video, no chime, nothing. Please help. Thank you.

Try resetting the power manager:
Disconnect your power adapter, and any other connections.
Remove the main battery.
Hold Shift-Control-Option, and press the power button. Release the buttons.
Reconnect the power adapter, and check if power will come on. Don't put the battery back in just yet.
If you again hear just the fan, press your caps lock. Does that light come on?
Can you hear the hard drive running? Shut back off, then restart to check that you hear the hard drive start running.

If some of this works - let the power stay on for a couple of minutes, then shine a bright light into the screen, checking for faint icons, or the menubar at the top of the screen - or the login window if you don't auto-login.

One more thing to try - shut down (hold the power button for 10 seconds to assure the unit is shut off.)
start - while holding Option-Command (Apple)-O-F (that's the letters oh and ef, OK?) Hold those keys for about 30 seconds after start. Then type 'reset-nvram' (without the quotes, and don't forget the (-)dash between the words), then press the enter key. Finally, type 'reset-all', again without the quotes, and press the enter key. If there is ANY response, you should get a boot chime, or SOMETHING should happen. If you get nothing at all, then likely the logic board is beyond help.

There are a couple more things to try, if you still want to try. Disconnect your built-in keyboard, and try to boot with no keyboard at all. You would have to remove your Airport card and the memory cover to get to the keyboard connector, so leave that disconnnected, too, when you try the power again. You can try attaching a normal USB keyboard, and try for a PRAM reset.

Now, if you still get nothing, no response, then the logic board is probably toast....
