Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple/Quantum
Model: Performa 6260/Quantum 6.4 GB Ext HD
RAM: 16meg
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
I have a Performa 6260 and am running System 8. Attached to my Mac are a Quantum 6.4 GB ext HD (SCSI ID 4) and a 1 GB Jaz ext HD (SCSI ID 5). The termination is at the Jaz HD. The problem occurs sometimes when I start up the Mac.

Sometimes when I startup the Mac I see the usual screens and then after the first extension loads (Speed Doubler) the system freezes and the error message says 'Illegal Instructions.'

I think it might be an extension conflict but it does not always happen. On the Quantum HD I have a backup copy of the Performa HD. Could it be that the 'Illegal Instructions' are caused by the computer finding 2 system folders and not knowing which one to use causing a crash?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hello Christopher,

Yes, your explanation is entirely possible, in fact, probable. If the problem is not an extensions conflict (try disabling Speed Doubler and/or the extension that loads right after it), a way around the error messages is to disconnect the Quantum, and only use it when you need to backup or restore items. Of course, that isn't much good if you backup daily.

Please reply to this message if you have any further questions and/or comments.
