Knowledge Level: Beginner
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: APPLE
Model: iMac
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8.5.1

Description:
My iMac is constantly crashing. What will happen is that I will click on a web site or open a dialog box or pull-down menu, and a little "I am busy" spinning disk will appear. From that point on, the only thing I can do is move the mouse pointer (now a spinning disk) around. Nothing else works. The clock doesn't update, no menus can be accessed, no open programs can be used. Nothing. I have to believe that it is still running because of the mouse, but I am too new to MacOS to say for certain. Everything I try does not work.

I was told that the new iMacs with OS 8.5.1 were practically crash-proof, but my iMac is constantly crashing! I wouldn't mind that so much if I could just restart it with a button combination or by pushing either the keyboard or main power button, but neither of those methods work! I have to physically pull the power cord out of the wall!

I don't know what to do. It typically happens when I am connected to the internet, but it has also happened at other times. It normally happens once per day.

Thanks,

David Stender

David,

have you tried the force quit combination? the command(open apple) option and escape keys together?

also how long have you had your imac? it's always good at least once a month to rebuild your desktop. that's command option during start up.

please email me back, I would like to make sure that your imac stops crashing so often since that is definitely not normal. There might be more going on.

Jeanne
