Doug,

I suspect the reason you are having problems is due to lack of RAM.

Simply to run 10.4.1 Apple says you need 256MB but this is only enough to see it actually function at all. If you want to actually use it for common day tasks then you need 512MB. However if you want to do cool stuff like video work you would greatly benefit with even more RAM.

To put things in perspective I have just set up an Apple system for video work and I installed 5.5GB of RAM - yes thats 5500MB. More than twenty times what you have!

I suggest you buy a minimum of 512MB to add your machine, ideally 1GB extra. You will definitely see a performance boost to your computer and not only with imovie but pretty much everything!!!

While you are upgrading your computer you may wish to update your system too. You can now download 10.4.2 from apple. Just select "software update" from the apple menu.

Before any updates I always recommend folk to "repair permissions". Just launch Diskutilities (located in the utilities folder in the applications folder), select your system drive and click "repair permissions" and let it do its thing.

To be honest, I'm surprised you can play back video at all with that much RAM!

Hope this helps you. If you need further advice do get back to me

regards

Tom

Thanks for your prompt reply TOM I guess its 'ram in', as much as I can afford @£100/512MB from the Apple Store and of course how much the slot will take.
I cant seem to find a 1 Gig RAM for the iMacG4 (so old and yet so young).

Happy editing with your 5.5 gigs you lucky people - HOW MUCH WAS THAT?

Doug,

I am not supposed to endorse any company or supplier as such so all I'll say is Apple is not the cheapest. (great computers but rubbish RAM supplier - there I've said it)

Have a look at Crucial.

I can vouch that this company supplies top quality RAM.

By the way, I've just "realised" your computer can only run a maximum of 1GB so my advice to you is to go for a 512MB stick. You'll have a total of about 768MB. My mac has this and runs fine with OS 10.4.2 and imovie etc.

item code:CT240377

(and £78.71, sounds better doesn't it!)
