I purchased a new OEM WinXP Pro [which includes SP3] to instal on my new Macbook using Boot Camp. However Apple states that Boot Camp 2.1 is necessary before installing this version.

My Catch 22 is how to upgrade B/C v2.0 to 2.1 before installing the SP3 version, considering it is an exe. file?

Hello Brett

thanks for using us at macosx.com and I will do my best to assist and advise you.

OK this one is rather easy - you are misunderstanding what is happening. BootCamp is a part of Leopard and can be updated like any other part of Leopard or Mac App - you can download the BootCamp Updater here http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...windowsxp.html

Once you have run that and followed any instructions to restart or whatever you should be able to then install your Windows XP SP3 without problems and just follow the special instructions relating to the BootCamp drivers that will appear when you first boot into Windows (basically the hardware detection will tell you to insert the Leopard DVD for it to install the special drivers for the Mac hardware.

I hope that sets you on the road and clears up your dilemma.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I went ahead and downloaded the 216mb update. However, as it was an exe file, I could do nothing with the files once they were extracted.

BCLocUpdateEnable.exe
BCUpdateXP.msp

I do not have yet any version of XP installed. XP SP3 is the first version I intend to instal, so updating from Boot Camp v2.0 is the stumbling block.

Many thanks,

Brett

Hello Brett

Sorry I think I partly misunderstood the problem...

I have found this... http://discussions.apple.com/thread....sageID=7840974

which implies that you can carry on regardless and then install the 2.1 BootCamp update exe in Windows... also Apple's pages say that you will need an XP (SP2) or (SP3) to install windows - they are not saying you can't install direct to SP3...

Do you have anyway to continue to install despite the warning?

I can't find any real reference to such a problem anywhere else... and you cannot be the first person ever to go straight to SP3

Let me know what happens

(PS you can trash the big download... it seems you have to install that via Apple Software Update from inside Windows... (seems a bit backwards to me )

I just noticed you say OEM Win XP Pro... what OEM - that may be a part of the problem... all I can find anywhere is this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888
