Q: I would like to replace the internal Express modem (28.8) which came with my Performa 6400/180; I have no port available for an external, and so I need to know what my options are as far as moving up to a 56K (ITU v.90 std.).

Hi Richard, welcome to Nowonder, I'm robertw.
Look on the back of the computer, next to the printer port, you will see a port covered up. This is the external modem port. The cover comes off. You can use an external modem on this port, but first, you MUST remove the internal modem. The internal modem disables the external modem port. This is easy to do on the 6400. Your user manual should show you where the communication card is. When you pull the board out from the back, this card will be the one that the phone line plugs into. It just pulls out of the slot.
There are no internal modems available for the Mac other than the ones that come with them.
