I have searched for this but maybe I'm not using the right keywords.

I understand, by default, Mac OS X attempts to mount any attached disk drive once you login. I have an internal hard drive and an external hard drive attached to my Mac Mini and I would like for Mac OS X to NOT attempt to mount my internal hard drive when I login.

See if this is what you want.

Wow that was hard. I am not very experienced at Unix commands but I was able to do exactly what the article said. It did not fix my problem. My internal hard drive, "Macintosh HD" still mounts on login and asks for my keychain FileVault password.

You have to turn FileVault off first, I believe. You didn't mention your drive was protected by FileVault in your post. That was pretty significant information to omit.

Sorry about that, I am fairly new to Mac but not to computers at all. Please feel free to send this topic to the forums if you cannot find any other solution. I will not substitute security to satisfy my annoyance. Thank you.

Kris,

I will gladly return this to the general pool. However, since you are using FileVault to protect the Users' files from prying eyes and fingers, why not also enable the Open Firmware password ?

It's also possible to make the hard drive invisible on the Desktop. There are two ways to do this. One is to set the invisible bit for the disk, the other is to precede the diskname with a period, ".". The latter is the Unix standard for making an item invisible. The former will require a utility like File Buddy to set or unset the invisibility bit.

I'm not real sure why you want to unmount the drive, so perhaps you might want to elaborate on that to help others better understand your goal, which will help in arriving at possible solutions.

I am using a Mac Mini. I added an external firewire HDD because firewire has faster disk access and improves the system's performance. I am not using anywhere near the capacity of my firewire, so I don't need my internal HDD to be mounted whatsoever most of the time. It has a backup of my previous documents whenever I happen to screw up on my firewire hard drive.
