Do you presently have an internet supplier?
Who is it?
What type of connection do you use - cable, DSL, dial-up, or something else like satellite?

Is your connection to the Mac coming from a router, or directly from the DSL modem?
Have you tried restarting the DSL modem and/or your router?
If you go to your System Preferences/network pane, do you see the ethernet cable as plugged in, and providing an IP address? And, what is that IP address displayed in the ethernet section?

Have you tried restarting your DSL modem?

Are you using wireless (which means you need a wireless card inside your iMac), or ethernet to connect to your DSL modem? USB won't work on your older OS X Mac for internet

If you go to your System Preferences/network pane - what do you see there about your internet/network connection?

Let me know what you find out...

You have really short answers! A modem error might be generated by incorrect, or unnecessary PPPOE settings. A DSL modem might need a PPPOE setup in the Network prefs, or it might only be in the modem configuration. If your modem is configured with PPPOE, then if you also setup your Network pane with PPPOE settings, you will probably prevent the modem from connecting.
Which needs PPPOE settings, your modem, or the system preferences? If you don't know the answer to that question, you should call your ISP for support with your connection.
