I presently have a 40 gig ipod that is about 1/2 full. It is formatted in windows because that was the computer that I had when I purchased the ipod. Since then I have seen the light, and now have a brand new G5. I would like to move my itunes library onto my new mac from my ipod, reformat my ipod into mac, and then move the tunes back. Is this possible? I would consider myself pretty much a newbie on the mac...I just don't want to lose the music that I already have and presently have no way to add music to it. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Bonnie,

Actually what you want to do is relatively easy.
The first thing you want to do is copy the music off your iPod onto the G5. To do this I recommend you download, and install, software called iPodRip. You can get the software at
http://www.versiontracker.com. Enter the term iPodRip into the search bar at the top of the page.
Once you download and install iPodRip run it and copy all your music off the iPod and onto the Mac. When you've completed that launch iTunes and then immport all the music on the G5.
Once you've successfully done this then connect your windows-formatted iPod to your G5. I'll assume you have the iPod CD that came with the iPod? Insert that into the G5 and then install the software from the CD onto the G5.
Once you've successfully completed that then run the iPod utility and format the iPod to the Mac format.
Once you've completed that - the iPod is not reset to its factory settings and ALL files have been erased - disconnect and reconnect the iPod from the G5. iTunes should not start running and recognize the iPod. Now, import all your music from iTunes to the iPod.
That's it. If you have any questions about any of these steps don't hesitate to ask.

Richard,
Thanks so much for your quick reply. I do have a couple of questions, though, so please bear with me. I have NO back up of my ipod (my PC computer hard drive did not have enough space to hold it all and function in any reasonable manner) so I really want to make sure I know what I am doing.
The first question is in the second paragraph of your reply. You say "Once you download and install iPodRip run it and copy all your music off the iPod and onto the Mac. When you've completed that, launch iTunes and then import all the music on the G5." (Isn't that the same thing??? Does IPod Rip copy the music somewhere else other than ITunes? Sorry to be such a novice. Also, wouldn't my Ipod already have to be connected to my computer to copy the music off of the iPod and onto the MAC?? Because you say to later connect my windows-formatted iPod to my G5.
I do have all the software that I need except iPod Rip and I'm going to download that right away. I just have this fear of plugging my windows formatted iPod into my new Mac and having everything disappear so I want to make sure I know exactly what I am doing.
Thanks in advance...

Bonnie

Bonnie,

Sorry for not being clear enough on the steps involved.

Step 1. Download and install iPodRip from versiontracker.com
Step 2. Connect iPod to Mac
Step 3. Launch iPodRip and copy music files from iPod to Mac
Step 4. Launch iTunes and import copied music files into iTunes library
Step 5. Format iPod in Mac format (NTFS) using iPod software
Step 6. Disconnect and reconnect iPod on Mac. iTunes should now see empty iPod.

If you're worried about losing music files - and I can appreciate that! - remember that iPodRip will be copying the files off the iPod and onto the Mac. Just verify that the music files are there, on the Mac, before proceeding.

Hope this makes it clearer?

Bonnie,

Not being a pest: just curious!!!! Good luck. I'm sure it will go smoothly. If you have any problems or other questions feel free to ask.

Now, back to listening to my own iPod!!!

Richard
