Background: My eMac ethernet port was zapped in a lightening storm, so I installed an AirPort card and I now use a Linksys wireless router to connect to the Internet (via cable modem). Problem: When I log out on the eMac, and log in a few hours later, the eMac cannot establish the wireless connection to the Linksys (i.e. the Linksys is not included on the eMac's pulldown list of available wireless sources). To establish the wireless connection to the Internet, I have to unplug the Linksys from its AC power source and plug it back in a few seconds later. The eMac then recognizes that the Linksys exists, and establishes the connection -- this procedure is 100% reliable.
Question: This must be a problem with the Linksys router unit. It apparently goes into a "sleep" mode when no communication occurs via its wireless port for a few hours. Any ideas on fixing this? thanks.
I've experienced a similar problem but unfortunately never solved it. I've got a number of other access points near my home and I think another device was connecting via DHCP and somehow affecting the Linksys. It may have been related to that device setting the speed to 54 Mbps and my 11 Mbps Airport card couldn't see it. It didn't matter whether the access point's default speed was Auto, 11, or 54.
You may want to try updating your access point's firmware by downloading a newer version from Linksys.
I've been running a third-party firmware on my Linksys WRT54G called Talisman (found here:
http://www.sveasoft.com/) and don't have the problem any more. However, I'm NOT suggesting you go this route.
