HELP!!
Good Morning, I am a fairly new Mac User and have managed to lock myself out of my Mac. The story is as follows:

Whilst trying to set up my broadband access with a usb modem I found I couldn't load the drivers properly.

I called my service provider who said that it was something to do with the settings on Tiger and to call Apple.

I called Apple who say they do not support USB modems and can't help me.

I then reinstalled Panther to see if that would work.

Panther reinstalled, the Mac shut down and rebooted, it then asked me to Log in but won't recognise my password (which is the same administrator password I have always had)

I now can't get into my machine full stop and still don't have any internet access,

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Mark.

Mark,
Welcome on macosx.com

You can reset the admin password.

1. Boot your computer using the Mac OS X Installer CD. (Note: You can force a CD ROM boot by holding down the C key during restart.)
2. At the Installer screen, select Reset Password from the Installer menu
3. Select the Mac OS X volume which contains the password you wish to change/reset.
4. After selecting the Mac OS X volume, click on the popup menu for the user that you want to reset the password to.
5. Once you have selected the user type in the new password and click on the Save button.
7. After clicking on the Save button quit the Reset Password application which will bring you back to the Installer screen.
8. Select Quit Installer for the Installer menu.

Hopes this helps
Philippe

Thanks Phil, that's a big help, do you have any idea what the problem may be with installing the USB Modem, it won't allow me to install the drivers but PlusNet who are the provider think it may be a problem with Tiger. I haven't been able to try it on Panther yet for the above reason but I have a feeling I might get the same issues. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks,

Mark.

No Mark, I do not thing you do bad things.

USB modem -and their drivers- are a calamity on Mac.

I'm quite sure "not because of Tiger or panther", but because their drivers are a so uggly port on the mac plateform from the PC written driver that's it is a shame that provider dares to say "Mac compatible"

I know and assume what I say.
A friend of mine, Panther, bougth the DSL package from our Belgian Belgacom provider. USB modem.
Cannot install. Kernel Panics every hour. Belgacom's technician comes twice, see nothing, "I cannot understand. This modem works on PCs"
What an answer !. Of course, yes, my microwave oven works without modem ;-)

So following my advices, my friend goes back to the Belgacom shops and asks for Ethernet modem as remplacement.
He receives (no extra cost) the same Thomson modem, but Ethernet one.
Plug in the G4. One minute later was surfing

To avoid you heart attacks -and to avoid to switch on PCs were such USB modem works fine- can I suggest you to try to exchange/buy an ethernet one. I'm quite sure your provider has somes.

Mark, do not believe I want to force you to add extra money on a machine which should work.
But to keep the peace in the family home, that's my suggestion ;-)

Regards
Phil.
