My BF was using my computer (an eMac - he has a Dell) and says it's broken. I check, and somehow he's deleted all the useful icons on my Dock: Apple - Mac OS X icon next to the Trash, the Mail icon, QuickTime, and Address Book!!
I'm in a terrified panic! We are leaving the country Saturday afternoon, and I can't get my mail or addresses! I also have to finish booking rooms and need email for confirmation. I had to go to Web Mail to get this activation code registered.
I'm afraid to shut down the computer for fear it won't be usable when we get back on Memorial Day, but I don't wanna leave it ON that long, either.
I looked at the Apple.com site and there was an article about pressing the Power button for 1 second to reset, then press it for less than a second to wake it back up, but I don't know if that's correct thing to address this issue. Is it? This doesn't make sense to me. Can't I just pull the Sleep function from the Apple on the top bar? What if I screw it up? I didn't buy the Apple Care package because it wasn't a 24/7 deal.
Where do I go to find these icons and put them back onto my Dock? And how do I do it? I have a Mac OS X For Dummies book and I can't find it in there.
If you can help, I will start breathing right again.

Hi Michele,
please don't panic 'cause if I've understood well your problem, there's nothing that can't be fixed...
Ok, starting from the applications icon, click on the Finder icon on your dock, on your hard drive icon on your desktop. On the left side of the window that will pop-up, select Application, then locate the Mail application. Simply drag it to the dock in the position you prefer, and repeat this step also for QuickTime and Address book, they're located in the same folder...
For the Apple - Mac OS X icon that was near the trash, open Safari, type
http://www.apple.com/macosx/ in the address line, position your mouse pointer on the apple that will appear near the address and drag it to the Dock, near to the trash...
Hope this is the solution for your problems.

My gosh, that was embarrassingly simple!!! THANK YOU in the biggest way possible! It worked exactly the way you said it would! Thank you for being awake at 5 a.m. Perhaps my brain was too freaked out to be of any use!
How could I have arrived at this solution sooner? What terminology should I have used to locate those icons and replace them?

Well, the icons in the docks are just shortcuts to your applications, and if you launch an application from your application folder, it would be shown in the dock. if you want to keep an app in the dock, when it's running you can [apple]+ click on it and select 'keep in dock'.
if you accidentally drag the icon outside the dock, you would lose it again. to replace it, simply locate the app you want in the app folder, you can also use the search tool in finder...
Ah, here in Italy it's around 3 p.m...
