We are into publishing industry. Our mac G3 machine is getting very slow while using Indesign 2.0. even with a 512 MB RAM. How can we improve it? if the Processor could be upgraded or replaced ? If yes what will be the cost?

Pramod,

I'm Tom and I will be assisting you.

Firstly I need to clear up whether you have a technical problem with you set-up. Has it been working faster than it is currently, with the same software configuration (including any plugins)?

Things that will slow down Indesign is not enough RAM and/or low hard disk space. If there is any problems with the hard drive or how the data is organised, this will also slow things down for you.

Indesign will use the Hard disk simply to store temporary files it needs to function properly so leaving a good chunk of spare hard disk space is essential.

Have run any disk-checking software recently. The best software for this job is, IMO, Diskwarrior and is worth every penny if you don't have it. tech tool pro is also very good.

Quite frankly, I suspect your problem is just down to the computer's age. Things have moved on a great deal since this machine was being sold! I can't see upgrading the processor would be financially worth it, even if you could find any upgrade kits. Such upgrades also have a habit of reducing the machine's reliability and at worst can even cause some software to stop working properly. You do not mention what computer you have, apart from G3, but have a look at this if you are intersted..

Even if you bought the bottom-of-the-range mac mini you would see an enormous difference in speed. You would of course also have to update Indesign for the latest OSX plus any other software you use.

I think you best course of action is to make sure your computer's hard disk is healthy, by running disk-checking software (at least use Apple's disk utility, which you should run from the original system CD that came with your computer - insert the CD and restart while holding the "c" key), rebuild the desktop file by restarting the computer with the shift key held down, and make sure you have plenty of space on the hard disk. After doing these procedures you find the speed is still too slow, I fear your best course of action would be a new Mac, and as I said before even a $500 mac mini would change your world!!

feel free to get back to me if you need further help/advice
Regards

Tom
