I have an imac power PC g3, 400mhz w/ 10.2.8 installed. When I start Safari my home page "google" appears,. After I type 1 or 2 letters in the search engine, Safari unexpectedly quits. I've tried to:

remove the com.apple/quicktime preferences but there wern't any.I've reset safari and emptied cache. and I also cleared history and reset the tabs.

So far it's a no go.

thanks for your help

Sean

Sean, welcome on macosx.com

(1) Could you try to repair permissions
(must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot
Test Safari

(2) you coul alos try to install the 10.2.8 combo
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...bo_10_2_8.html
over your existing 10.2.8
After installing, repair permissions again

Philippe,

thanks for the advice. I tried to repair permissions and all that, and I have the combo installer (it's what I used in the 1st place. It turns out I can run safari as long I don't type anything into a search field like google (this main page one, not the top right corner one) or in the subject heading of my yahoo account. I don't have the com.apple.safari file in my library. any other possibilities,

thanks

com.apple.Safari.plist is in ~/Library/Preferences where ~ represents your Home icon
If you can launch Safari, you must have one

Philippe,

So I trashed the com.apple.Safari.plist. but it didn't change the fact that I can't type a search in google or a recipient/subject heading in yahoo mail. there was another website that had a search area that caused it to crash as well. Strangely enough I can type a search in yahoo. So I'm working with a delicate safari. any guess as to why its only the search part?

thanks

Well, search part are often handled by Java.
Could you try to download Firefox from www.mozilla.org and go to the same pages which fail with Safari ?

Sean,
(1)about Firefox bouncing behavior
Everytime I installed a Firefox new version, I have to start (the 1st start) this new version two or three times before it really opens insteab og bouncing in the dock

(2)
> 2005-08-08 11:53:17.891 safari[452] gif decompressor
In HardDisk/Library, do you have a folder named
- Input Managers
if yes, which files in (except the classical Java,Quicktime stuff) ?
Same for your own Library : your Home icon -> Library

(3)
An unusable QuickTime preference can cause Safari to quit when you click on a media link. To check for that issue, follow these steps:
If Safari is open, quit it (Command-Q).
Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Type: ~/Library/Preferences/
Click Go.
Locate this file: com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
Drag the file to the desktop.
Reopen Safari.
(Note: The tilde (~) character represents your home folder)

Philippe
