Ok, well I am tying to install OS X 10.2.4 onto my girlfriends iBook. She had problems when her father tried to install version 10.3. It is my first time ever working with a mac however I am a best buy geek squad agent so I know pretty much about computers in general. I insert the disk by holding down the space key after holding the power button, put the disk in, hold c. It starts up and I see the apple symbol with a rotating circle on the bottom. Then the apple symbol changes to a no sign like a little no smoking sign thing of some sort. What is wrong and what must I do? Thanks for all the help!

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=106464-en

(2) What is this 10.2.4 CD ? a CD deliver with the machine by Apple ?
10.2.4 is an update to an existing 10.2.0

(3) What was the errors the father encounters when installing 10.3 ?

(4) Was the iBook running old 9.x OS before attempt to install Mac Osx (whatever 10.2 or 10.3) ?
If 9.x, have you check
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117-en
that the iBook does not require a firmware update ?

Alright well the 10.2.4 cd is the CD that came with the computer when shipped. There are 2 disks for that. I also have 3 software restore disks that are 9.2.2. The iBook has 800mhz/128mb/30gb/CD. The father was installing 10.3 when it started processing in japenese and continued for 3 days. That is all the information he has given me at the time. My goal is just to do a fresh install. Is it possible with the disks that came with the computer? I recieve a prohibited sign when I attempt to boot from the cd. I recieve the same sign with both 10.2.4 and 10.3. I have gotten the hardware test to run and the first time i recieved a cdrom error. then the second time no error. Could that be an issue? Thanks for all the help. Im looking into the links as we speak.

?? The Japanese message ask for rebooting or does the father install the OS in japanese ? If lattest, what mean these "3 days" ?

Can you boot on a 9.x system ? If yes, do you see the hard drive ? If yes, use DriveSetup on this 9.x disk to wipe the internal drive.

Well, I say this because one month ago, I face the same problem of probibited sign when booting on Jaguar or Panther on an iBook Dual USB: in fine, the hard drive was dead.

Well he was upgrading from the 10.2.4 to 10.3 in English then after a few hours it began to show japenese symbols and he let that run for a while then got fed up and just turned off the system. That is all the information i have on that part since i was not involved in the upgrade process. I dont have any 9.x system disks. Only disks that i have are the 10.2.4 with me. Can i find a format utility elswhere that i can burn to a disk and format the drive? Thank you Philippe so far for the help.

Okay new thing happening.

I let it get through the begining steps where i choose language and such. Until i get to select hard drive to install to. I get no options... Then i said okay probably need to set up a partition. So i use the partitioning software on the disk and attempt to partition. It says preparing drive.... then it just does not go any further. Am i out of a hard drive?

yes, maybe
When you boot on the install CD, there is a the main menu above, a way to launch DiskUtility of the CD; launch it and check if you can see the drive; if yes, format it as HFS+

From the article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=106214-en
try, in ascending order of importance
* the safe boot
* the repair disk through disk utility
* the fsck (but I think this will failed as the father has faced problems with installaing Panther)

if you can see the drive through DU -> format it

Otherwise, booting on a commercialm repair disk like DiskWarrior or TechToolPro and checking if the drive appears

if not -> you know what
if yes and you can format it, then perhaps you have problem with your CD drive

Alright... Well i am using the disk utility... Click on the 27.95 GB FUJITSU that is shown.. Hit partition and select anything. Ive tried 3 different types and it frezes at the same point where it says "preparing drive: unmounting old old volumes" I need to go to work but i will leave that run while i attempt to find a free repair disk that i can use. The drive appears but i think it may just be because the lack of power in the utility that i am using. Possibly throw hard drive into my external bay and just use some Partition Magic or something of that effect on it to do a low level 0 and 1 partition... Then throw it back in and try some more. Otherwise i may just end up with a new hard drive that i can get for like 80-90 at best buy since i work there... Wish me luck and let me know if you think of why this may be happening. Its 3:10 now and ill be back at like 10:30 sooo... send me an update or if you want to send me an e-mail @ Compulatorman@wi.rr.com or text me at P1x3L4T0R. Thanks for all the help so far!

I had -ans till continue- to format tons of drive through DU and never find any pproblem, either on Mac drive, Windows previously formatted drive or even Unix/Linux NTFS one.
If DU fails, then something wrong on you hard drive.
DU is only a front end to basic/format Unix command
