Michael,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

First, locate the 10.2 CD and start up the iMac using the CD (insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down C key).
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu (or Options) and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk. Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time. This is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You want to see no reference to repairs made - which may mean you have to click on that button three or four times.

How much memory is installed on the computer? To find this, just go to the Apple menu at the top far left and select About This Mac. The window that opens will give you the amount of memory installed, processor speed and exactly what OS version you are running.

How much empty available space is on the hard drive? To find this, just open a window. At the very bottom you should see how many items and how much available space.

Hello cheryl,

Thanks for the tip. i found the disk and went thru your instuctions and it found an error with the keys while repairing the disk. It said it reparied the disk. i also did a check on the permissions and it found a lot of different permiissions, so i repaired that also. I hook up the dsl connection again and tried to launch IE 5.2, the only thing i get is a window saying internet explorer 5.2 then a small window flashes and then it closes. I also tried to add another user to the system and i am logged in as the admin user. i type in all the required info then i click save, it looks like it saves it but i never see the new user on the list. It doesnt look like it fixed anything. Do you have any other suggestions? oh i have 256 mg of memory and 31gigs free of hard dive spack available. Thanks again for all your help.

Michael,

Did you install anything just before this happened? Added any devices?

You do have the minimum ram and enough hard drive free space, so that is not the problem.

Have you tried using Safari? Does that work? I am assuming that you can get your emails.

Cherly,

Well i dont think anything new was installed or added. This computer i my son's computer and i dont live with him, but i dont think he installed anything. He mainly surfs the net, downloads walpaper and plays itunes. We are not too familar with Mac systems, so i am just learning on the fly. and just to prove that to you...what is Safari? I seen to think it is a virus. what do you think? Thanks again

Michael,

Safari is OS X's web browser. It's icon is a compass. There is no known viruses for Mac OS X. You can rest assure that there is no virus, trojan horse or worm on the Mac.

Knowing how sons can be (I have two myself) double check with your son to make sure he did not download and install a new program. System enhancers will create this problem, especially an internet speed or accelerator program.

Michael,

Before doing that, try this:

1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.

The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."

Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.

When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.", 6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.

Now give things a try.

Thanks cherly,

I ran the fsck and got this result:

/dev/fdisk0s5
root file system
checking HFS plus volume.
checking extents overflow file.
checking catalog file
Keys out of oder
(4.14521)
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.

Sounds like a big problem. Any more tricks? Thanks again

Michael,

Now you need a third party utility like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro. You need the CD of one of those programs to start up the computer and have it scan and repair the drive.

Once that is done, you should be running smoothly.

If Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro) say the drive can not be repaired, it may be possible to still get it going by doing a clean install. That means to wipe the drive clean and start from nothing. You will need to make sure you have the installers for all the programs you have installed as well as make a backup of all the important files - such as music, desktop pictures, etc.

Making a backup of the files needs a CD burner, zip disk, external hard drive, or a .mac account with enough disk space to save these files.

Then using the OS X CD, start up the computer with it, use Disk Utility (from the Installer Menu) to erase the drive, format it using HFS extended, then use First Aid to double check and repair the drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with the installation.

Let me know if one of the third party utilities fixes the problem.

Michael,

The Mac OS X install disks do not have OS 9. If you have the OS 9 CD, you then can start with OS 9 install(after using Disk Set up to totally erase the drive), the follow with OS X.

Otherwise, you should use the Restore CDs. Remember to back up your important files.

Insert Restore disk 1.

Choose Restart from the Apple menu.

Press and hold the C key until the "Welcome to Macintosh" message appears.

Select the disk or volume onto which you want to restore the software, then click Restore. This process could take 20 to 30 minutes.

When prompted, remove the disc from the drive, and insert the next one as indicated on the screen.

When this process is finished, restart your computer to use the new software.

This will not replace your OS 9 programs. You will have to install those.

Michael,

Since Restore Disk 1 does not work, it is time to use the Mac OS Install Disk 1.

Start up with the OS X CD (matching the version you are running- Disk 1)
Insert the CD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk utility.
When that opens click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer.

Let me know how you do.

Michael,

That error means that the B-tree records or referenced records have become damaged. This is a serious hard drive error.

I highly recommend that you get Disk Warrior for the machine. If that is not an option, then first back up all those important files, then:

Start up with the OS CD disk 1
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu (or Options) and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the first icon at the top left, then click on erase. Select Mac OS (Extended) as the format then give the hard drive a name. You will also see Install Mac OS 9 drivers. Make sure that is checked marked.

Now click on the erase button.

When done, click on First Aid and have it repair the drive. If it comes up with repairs done, click on repair drive again. If it comes up with can not repair the drive, you will need to replace the hard drive. It is not that often that a hard drive fails, but it does happen.

If everything is an okay, quit Disk utility and follow the prompts to install the OS.
You will have to install all the programs and applications as you had to totally erase the drive in order for it to be repaired.

Michael,

If you are sure that you will not need OS 9, then, yes, you can install just OS X.

Remember that if there is no OS 9 folder, you will not be able to use Classic for those old programs that have not been updated to OS X. I have a scanner that will never be updated so I need OS 9.

Well i dont know what uses what, but i guess my choices are get disk warrior or format the drive and load os9 the osx. Are you sure that disk warrior can fix the keys out of order issue? Can i load OSX the load os9 later?

Michael,

Disk Warrior can fix many problems that Disk Utility can not. What I can not do is guarantee it for your machine as I do not know how deep the problem is. It is worth the try, though.

Yes, you can install OS X - make sure you install OS 9 drivers and use Mac OS Extended format if you format the drive using Disk Utility!!!
