I have a Lap top Power Book G4 15" titanium (18 months old). I had been running v10.3.9 and just upgraded to 10.4.

Last week, (while still running 10.3.9) I must have done something or hit a key stroke, but I lost the start up chime?

I thought upgrading to 10..4 might fix the problem but it didn't.

How can I get it back?

Is there a way to turn it on or off?

Howdy! Check your system sound level, it might be set to "mute". That would turn off the restart chime, I believe.

Let me know if this helps!

I'm not patronizing you, this setting can turn itself off sometimes. Is it off or on in the System Prefs?

It is on. Just to humor you I checked again.

I purposefully played some mpeg files to make sure I had sound.

The chime is the only thing missing.

No that wasn't even close to answering my question.

I have a different laptop Power Book G4 1Mghz. There is no reset button on the back.

Still looking for answer out there. I wonder why Apple Support hasn't responded this this in a FAC release?

HI what you need is a little utility called Tinker Tools System, this lets you do a number of things that are useful on your Mac. In this case specifially turn the Chime on and Off.
It is available from http://www.bresink.de/osx/index.html. You need the TinkerTool system. The main TinkerTool does not have this facility.

I don't knowwhat you did to turn it off in the first place, you must have found a hidden key combo.

I am pretty sure it can also be controlled by the Terminal, but I would have to hunt for the code to do it.

Pretty sure that this will cure your problem, in the meantime I will see if I can find any other ways to turn the chime on and off.

odd what was the warning message. There is not much in Tinkertool System that can go wrong or cause problems.
You can screw some things up with the TinkerTool Pro App, but even that warns you of any consequences before you do anything.
I will see if I can find the Unix Code for it, I know it's around here somewhere

From what I have been reading changing the startup chime is definitely something that Apple did not make it easy to do, no Unix code yet, but this little tool might hel.
http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/S.../index.en.html.

There is also a thread on this site on the subject but as it goes from startup chime to Star Wars Etc, I will only send it to you if you really want it, you could probbably locate it here anyway.

tried your link.

loads a page that says page can't be found and then loads a page with all asian fonts . . . ??

I've sent an e-mail to tinkertool and have had a response. he's given me a couple apple sights to check out.

Ok sorry about the link, but it is actually a redirect and I cannot get to the original link to send to you.

If you do a Google search for Macintosh Startup Chime PrefPane and you should be able to access a link that will let you download a PrefPane which opens in the System Preferences and allows you to turn the Chime on and off.

Let me know how you manage would you. It certainly looks like Apple have made it bery difficult to alter the Startup Chime in any way but some people have figured it out.
Definitely not found any code that will do it.
