Hi,

Heres how to go about it. Click on an mpeg file>click get info>go to open with and select Real Player. Be sure to click on Change All.
Do the same for your avi file but this time select VLC.
The next time you double click on your media it would launch your preferred application.

bests,

peter

could you happend to tell me how to switch the icon from what used to be the mpeg/quicktime icon (which is now changed to a blank page) to one that is like a real player file.

I'm not quite sure if I understood you but if you follow the steps I enumerated the file icon should change to a real player file.
