Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Power Mac 8600
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I had a hard disk crash yesterday and reformatted the hard disk on my Mac 8600 (with G3 upgrade card at 292MHz) and reloaded the Mac OS 8.1 on it.
Now I have a peculiar problem:
When appletalk is on (and the extensions "Shared Library Manager and Shared Library Mananger PPC are installed), it takes up to 10 seconds for the pulldown menu to come up when I try to open a menu on the menubar using the mouse. The same problem is in the Finder as well as all applications. All other commands (window close, file quit) work speedy as ever when I use the keyboard.

When I make appletalk inactive, the problem disappears.

It is annoying to wait 10 seconds to pull down a menu. Since I use appleshare and have my laptop (3400) and a Duo 2300 Dock attached via Ethernet I can not just solve the problem by making appletalk inactive.

I have run Norton Utilities 3.5.1, rebuild the desktop and zapped the PRAM. I have a ZIP Drive, Paperport installed and lots of extensions!

Can you give me advice what the problm might be.

Thank you very much for all your help

Bernard Dannenberg

Hi welcome to Nowonder

Go into your control panel to General Controls and uncheck the protect System and files. While there turn Menu Blinking to off and the insertion to fastest. See if that helps. Best regards sharona@nowonder
