Description:
I am having problems with my modem, signing on to the Internet. I have a built in Global Village Teleport Platinum V 28.8 modem, and I am a member of AOL. Recently, I have had a very difficult time signing on. The modem does not get a dial tone from my phone line. If I continue trying, the modem gets a fast busy signal from my phone line. I have only one phone line, and I started out using a phone jack splitter to allow me to leave my modem plugged in and a phone plugged in to the same jack. I cannot get on at all with this set up now. I have to plug directly into the phone jack. After trying unsuccessfully to sign on, I find that I must quit AOL, unplug the modem, plug in the phone, get a dial tone, and then reverse the procedure and try AOL again. It seems random when I am actually successful and get a dial tone. When I do, the modem dials the number properly and I get on to AOL fine. I have checked to make sure my modem is selected in AOL, and when I do get through, it works fine. My phones work fine. I have tried changing phone cables to the modem, with no success. Could the phone jack be the problem? It just seems strange that I do not have phone problems at all, and that I am periodically successful. I am looking for any suggestions to try. Thank you in advance for your consideration!!

Welcome to No Wonder! Patrick.
It seems to me that the problem is the phone splitter jack. Your phone may work fine, and the modem works fine when you have the modem in the wall, but you said your problems exist when you use the splitter. I would try using the other side of the splitter for the modem (i.e.: switch the phone and modem, although the phone may not work then). One half of the splitter may be broken. Or try another splitter. If this doesn't work, you may be forced to not use that phone jack for a phone, and only use it for your modem.
But it seems that there is no problem with your computer's set up -- it most likely has to do with your phone hardware.
Good luck!
Greg
