Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Power Mac G3
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1
Description:
A nice lady (I forget her name, I think it was Cheryll) gave me the solution to this problem which worked fine. But I lost her instructions. I now installed OS 8.1,( not HFS+) on another computer and again I get the message from Norton's Disk Doctor(V3.5.2.) "Desktop bad modification date".
She told me to use Norton's Find utility and look for desktop
It came up with Desktop Folder, DB file, DF file, etc. She told me which one to throw away to fix the problem. I can't remember which file to move to the trash. But it did fix the problem. Can Cheryyl or Cheryll or someone else help with the problem? She said the error occurred during installation of 8.1 and was related to one of the applications that was installed.
Thank very much,
Roger Marquette

Hi Rodger, welcome back to nowonder, I'm robertw.
Here's what you can do to fix the problem. Use the Fast Find
utility (part of NUM) to find files named 'Desktop'. You should have
at least 4 items come up (Desktop DB, Desktop DF, Desktop Folder, and
Desktop.) The file 'Desktop' is unnecessary, and that is the file
that is giving you the problems. Once you have that file listed in
the Fast Find window, click on it to highlight it then go to the File
menu and choose Move... To Trash. The trash will not bulge because
this is an invisible file, but it will be deleted once you put a
visible item in the trash and choose Empty Trash.
If you're curious, generally, that file was created when you
installed MacLink Plus with OS 8. It does, indeed, have a bad
creation date which signals that it should rebuild the desktop.
Apparently, any time that creation date is changed (such as after
fixing it with NDD,) the desktop will rebuild on startup. Trashing
that file ends the cycle, and it doesn't adversely affect any system
functionality.
