Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: apple
Model: imac
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I just purchased a new iMac, mail order. Starts up but a blank screen. Worked with a senior tech. at apple for two hours today by telephone. Reset pram, checked all cables, attached a separate monitor, reset cpu card, tried all the tricks, still no image on the monitor.

To my frustration I am told it cannot be returned to the vendor or apple, I must take it to an apple service provider, of course thats 40 miles away. So after paying for shipment to my office I am now stuck with a dead iMac until I can take a half day to run it to an Apple Service center. Not the way to win frinds in the apple world.

Any help would be appreciated.

sounds a dead video board on the logic board. it's not Apple that is giving you a hard time about returning it, it's the mail order company you got it from. Apple will be happy to repair it for you, but you are correct that you will need to take it to an authorized apple dealer to be repaired. you just got a bad product, happens to all computer manufacturers. once you get it fixed, you will love the iMac. Apple may just end up replacing the unit as opposed to repairing it. note the serial # and compare with the one you get back from the shop.
