Hello,
I need help! I have a Powerbook G4, processor 500 Mhz, Memory 256 MB SDRAM, 20G HD. I've just installed Tiger on to it & migrated some of my applications & "root" info from my work mac. Everything seems fine in "safe boot" mode. But when I restart the desktop backround shows but not the icons. The only thing that comes up is the spotlight magnigying glass icon in the upper right corner (where the user name usually is & when the mouse is over it the spinnig beach ball shows up.
I tried looking up this problem on this sight.. I found something but didn't quite understand the solution... I need help in lamens terms... (don't know what HFS+ is) I checked the login/startup items... nothing in there... repaired permissions, checked my hard drive using the tiger disk, disk utilities. Now I'm going to try zapping the PRam. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone help me out?
Jaclyn

Jaclyn,
Does your battery take a charge? Are you using the power adaptor?
If your battery is not taking a charge, then you will need to replace that first, before the Pram battery. Replacing the Pram battery is a bit tricky.
You can get a replacement battery for your powerbook from here:
http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/
at a reasonable price.
Once you calibrate the battery - charge it up using the power adaptor, then unplug the adaptor and allow the battery to go all the way down until it forces the powerbook to sleep, then plug in the adaptor to charge it up.
This should correct your battery problems.
As for Spotlight, go to Home>Library>Preferences
Trash the com.apple.Spotlight.plist file
Empty the trash
Now give it a try.
