I trashed my OS X System Preferences folder by accident... I KNOW!!!! It's about the stupidist thing I've ever done. I thought it was just an alias, but NOPE.... my whole folder is gone (Yes, I emptied the trash bin too). However, all of my preferences that I set are still intact... I just can't open the System Preferences panel anymore and I REALLY need it to install my new Epson printer's software and to correct some font duplication issues I'm having.
I just bought this used G4 with Mac OS X already installed on it. This is my first time using OS X but I've been working on Macs since I studied graphic design in college (approx 15 years)... so I'm pretty familiar with how all this stuff works.
The previous owners gave me the OS X User Manual but forgot to give me the cd (I'm trying to get it from them now). I'm hoping once I get the cd I can just do a custom install/restore on the System Preferences folder only. Is this corect? Is there any other way I can restore my System Preferences folder WITHOUT having the OS X cd?
Help?
Lisa
Hi Lisa
You'll need the OS CD to get your preferences back, and a program called 'Pacifist' to get the preferences off the Disks. You can get Pacifist here;

If you have OS X version 10.0.x, I would suggest getting version 10.2 (Jaguar) at least and upgrade. Any system prior to 10.2 was more Beta than a finished system.

If I upgrade to OS 10.2 will it automatically restore the System Preferences with the upgrade or do I have to restore my System Preferences BEFORE I can upgrade?
Thanks,
