Hello,

I have a problem with my 1.8 Ghz PM G5 (OS X 10.4.2).

When the computer has been on for about 2 hours and 32 minutes (+- a few minutes), the network shuts down and I have to restart the computer in order to get online again. I have a router (I have tried to restart the router but it doesn't help) and I have unchecked all the options in the Energy Saver preference pane. Also when the network is down, the computer cannot go to sleep because this makes it freeze. Also when the problem is occuring, it takes about 2 minutes for the computer to restart or shut down.

I have searched everywhere but still haven't found a solution. If you could help me with this I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you!

Kryddan,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. It sounds like you may have some options set in the computer's modem.

Go to System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and select Network.
In the Show pull down menu select Internal modem.
When the window changes you should see PPP options at the very bottom, click on that.
Uncheck all the boxes. Click on the okay button.

As for your slow restarts, check the Accounts pane (in System Preferences) and click on your user name, then click on Login Items.
I need to know what is listed there.

I tried checking off all the options in the internal modem menu, but the network still stopped working. As for my login items, I have LCCDaemon, which is the Logitech Control Center.

Thank you!

Kryddan,

What do you have set in the Network pane in System Preferences - automatic DHCP or PPPoE? Who is your ISP?

I have automatic DHCP, my ISP is a Swedish company called BBB.
Do you think I should change so that I connect with PPPoE instead?

Thanks again!

Kryddan,

Actually DHCP is the setting you should have, so you are okay there.

When was the last time you did a repair disk with Disk Utility?

Try this (it is Unix version of Disk Utility).

1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.

The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."

Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.

When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.

Let me know how you do.

I did as you described and the disk utility modified the system once. I did the check again and the system appeared to be OK. But the network still does not work after about 2.5 hours.

Is it perhaps something wrong with the hardware?

Thanks!

Kryddan,

There is something in your setup that is logging you out. You said you have a router, what model is it? Also, what model is your DSL modem?

I tried looking into BBB's web site for some help, but it is all in swedish (I think) and could not understand the home page enough to find the support section.

The DSL modem has a built in router and it was supplied by BBB. The model is from XAVi Technologies Corp. and is called X5222rp3. I went to their site (http://www.xavi.com.tw/Products/Products.htm)
but I couldn't find that particular model.

I have two other computers (one iMac and one PC) linked to the same router and none of these have problems with their network.

I have tried to switch cables and swithing the position of the cables but this doesn't help either.

Thanks again!

Kryddan,

You have done a good job of troubleshooting. We now know that it is not the router, or the cables.

Let's check to see what is running when you start up. Go to System Preferences?Accounts and click on your user name, then click on Login Items.

What is listed there?

Next, go to the Utilities folder and start up Console. You can minimize it or hide it, but it should be running while you work. When you find after that 2 hour timing, that you are no longer connected, check the Console and copy and paste here what it reports just before the disconnect and after.

In the login items only one item is listed, LCC Daemon, Logitech Control Center.

This is what came up in the console at the time the network stopped. If you want I can do the same thing again only without starting Azureus. (There is a lot about Azureus, but the network shuts down even when I don't use that software.)

Kryddan,

From that log it looks like the eclipse widget is causing the problem.

Go to Home>Library>Widgets. Trash the widget that belongs to eclipse.org.

Now give it a test run.

Kryddan,

One more thing. That widget also has a preference file that needs to be trashed.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences. The file should be named something similar to widget.com.eclipse.xxxplist

I removed all my widgets, except the ones provided by Apple, and all their preferences. I also removed everything containing the word ecplipse, and I didn't start Azureus. But still the network stopped working. I checked the consol but nothing had changed when the network went down, no text had appeared.

What could it be?

Thanks!

Krydden,

If the console has nothing to report, I am not sure what the cause it. Double check the ethernet connection to your machine. Is it lose or have play in it?

If so, try a different ethernet Cat 5 cable.

If everything looks fine, then give the unix disk utility first aid a try again.

I have double checked the cables and even switched them. I did the Unix disk utility again and the only thing that came up was that a file had a invalid name. I checked again and the system appeared to be OK. This time I didn't start any programs except the consol and still the network shut down after about 2 h and 32 minutes.

Perhaps it could be some harware issues.

Thanks!

Kryddan,

Your computer came with an Apple Hardware Test CD. It is on the CD labeled Additional Software. Use the Hardware Test CD to test the hardware side of things. This should help us in determining if there is a hardware failure with the ethernet port.

Let me know what it reports.
