I've got a Centris 650 running OS 8.1 that I'd like to establish a file sharing connection with an iMac running OS 10.5.1.
On the iMac, I've got a DSL connection with IP 192.168.0.2. with AppleTalk active. File Sharing is on, both AFP and FTP.
On the Centris, I've got AppleShare 3.8.3 (extension), TCP/IP 1.3 (control panel), and Open Transport Library 1.3 (extension). The IP address is set to 192.168.0.3
When I use the Chooser on the Centris and type in the IP address of the iMac, I get the error "user authentication method required by this server can't be found".
When I use the iMac to connect to the Centris, the Centris share can not be found.
Any help on how these two to share files?

Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP.

You may be able to use this to create a network:

Eric
I am, in fact, trying to initiate the connection from the Centris with 8.1. I select "AppleShare" in the Chooser, I type in the IP address of the Mac OS X machine (192.168.0.2) and get the following error:
"The User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again."
Any ideas?

I have an OS 8.1 client (motorola 68K processor) that is able to connect to my OS X computer.
It's been a while since I set it up. I think you may need to update the Appleshare client to this one:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58360
This includes uams (User Access Modules) which will be found in the Extensions/Appleshare Folder.
