TICKET ARCHIVE -> Networking Mac Osx to Win Xp

Ok this is going to sound pretty dumb....
I have a pc laptop (xp home) and a mac laptop (osx tiger). I had them connected for a couple of weeks, filesharing down a cat5 patch cable connected directly between the two, with a bt broadband modem plugged into the pc and the mac able to access it. All worked fine, although the mac was a bit slow to recognise the pc in finder sometimes. Then last week the connection dropped as i was moving the computers around and i haven't been able to get them to work since. I've changed the cable since and a number of settings, ip addresses, subnet mask etc. Can't get anything to work. Can't even seem to ping from one to the other. Tried setting up network all over again but that didn't work either and to tell the truth i can't remember exactly how i did it the first time and it may have been a fluke!
Currently using pc ip address as 192.168.0.1 and mac as 192.168.0.2 and subnet masks for both as 255.255.255.0, though whether that makes sense i'm not sure. It certainly doesn't work! I don't even remember whether I manually configured the first time or not - it just seemed to go together very easily and now it won't.
Any help gratefully received while i still have hair!
Many thanks
martin

I think the key is setting the PC as router in your Mac Network setup.

Thanks for your quick response gsahli,
I tried that fix but unfortunately there's no change in the situation. Still can't ping either way...
oh, hang on....
well i'll be...i tried that fix first about an hour ago. No change. Tried everything I could think of. Just as I was typing this i went to the network preferences, clicked pppoe as the means of connection and then back to tcp/ip (with the same settings as before) and it connected, apparently with no change to the settings and after i'd done something which i'd done a dozen times before. i'm totally confused at the apparent randomness of the connection (as it seemed to go off in the first place without good reason as well), pleased that it's working now, and worried that it won't be tomorrow! Anyway, I've locked the settings, so hopefully i won't be able to do too much damage. If you have any further thoughts on this i'd love to hear, otherwise thanks again

Hi gshahli,
My fears were obviously justified! After shutting down both computers and restarting, the connection was lost and I'm back to a situation where I can't even ping one from the other. Before the problem started it would connect automatically on startup. I haven't changed any settings so in theory it should all work. Any ideas on why this is happening would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks
Martin

Sorry,
I don't think I have any new ideas. I'd suggest you get a cheap router. It will save you headaches and be more secure, too.

I'll look into it.
Cheers,
