Dear Sirs,

I have a general idea about networking but I want to ask a few questions to confirm my thoughts so that I head into the right direction. I have recently upgraded an imac (g3 500mhz, 512mb pc100 ram) with OS X Tiger 10.4.1 and I have a pc with xp sp2. I know I can network via ethernet using tcp/ip and this is the only option I would consider because to use airport on this mac would cause me to expend too much cash for my purposes. I have a linksys wireless router that I use with the pc and I quess I am a little foggy on exactly what to do. I want to network the two for printer and internet funtionality while maintaining the wireless capability for the pc. What steps should I take with the equipment I have and if need be, what aquisitions may I need to make to see this network come to fruition.

Regards
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

My name is Richard and I will be your support technician and assisting you with your problem.

If I'd just like to ask you a few things so I can make sure I understand things:

You have a wireless router, your PC is connected via wireless & you want the Mac connected by a cable. Is that correct ??

- Does your router have a port to connect a printer ? (some router do/some don't).

- With the printer, do you want the ability to print from either system without having to rely on the computer it's current plugged into to be turned on all the time ?.

I think that's all the info I need for now. I have a network wired/wireless setup running various versions of Windows, Linux & OS X. They all work perfectly together, so I can help get you set-up in no time :-).

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your assistance. Yes, my pc is connected via wireless router. My router has the ethernet internet port and 4 more ethernet ports. My desire is to have the Mac hooked up via cable/ethernet. My desire is also to use the printer with both OSes. Thank you for your assistance once again.

Hi Daniel,

I'll walk you through a two part process. Since you're PC is already running on the router I'll walk you through how to share the printer.

On the PC:

1) Right-click "My Computer" on the desktop and select Properties)
2) Select the ' Computer Name' tab

Note down the workgroup name. Then press the cancel button.

To set-up printer sharing:

1) Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2) Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
3) In the Printers and Faxes folder, click the printer's icon and, in the tasks pane, click Share This Printer.
4) Open the printer's Properties dialog box, and click on the Sharing tab.
5) Click Share Name, and then click OK.

The printer will now be available for other computers to use.

On your Mac:

1) If you haven't already done so, plug the network cable into you iMac and the router. Then boot into OS X.

2) Go to the utilities folder (Applications/Utilities), double click on 'Directory Access'. The services tab should be listed. To make changes you might need to click on the lock in the bottom left corner & enter your admin password. Next select the entry 'SMB' make sure the box is checkmarked, and press the 'configure' button. Then make sure the 'Workgroup' entry matches what was set on Windows, Then press OK, and close the Directory Access screen.

3) Go into System Preferences, click the Network icon. From the 'Show' drop down box select 'Ethernet' (it may show my default). Click the TCP/IP tab and if the router is set-up to give addresses automatically. You should see info in the fields: IP Address, subnet mask, and router. If you don't see any information try pressing the 'Renew DHCP Lease' button.

4) If the info is there, that means you should have internet access. Open Safari or you browser of choice and see if you home page comes up.

Set-up Printer:

1) Launch Print Center

2) Hold down the Option key while clicking the Add button (in the Printer List window)

3) Select Advanced from the first pop-up menu.

4) Pick "Windows Printer via SAMBA" in the "Device" pop-up menu.

5) Enter whatever you want in "Device Name"

6) Enter the URI in "Device URI". The syntax is: smb://Server Name/Share Name

for example if the user name on your PC is Daniel and the share name of the printer is 'demo' it would be: smb://Daniel/demo

7) Pick the printer vendor from the Printer Model pop-up menu, and the subsequent model.

You may, however, also need to download printer drivers from Gimp-Print: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 . Or if you're printer has official Mac support you can use the CD or download the drivers from the website.

If all goes well, you should be sharing your internet connection and your printer. If you wish to share the printer from your Mac to XP at times. Let me know it's a fairly easy procedure.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

Hi Daniel,

This is just a follow-up message to see whether my walk through helped to get your network up and running ?. If so then that's great I will go ahead and close this case. If you're still having problems let me know and I can help you to resolve them.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hey,

I am finally getting to it this weekend. I need to reset my linksys router though, I have moved and my password escapes me. I am also researching WPA. I believe I need to get firmware updates from Linksys to enable this.

Regards
Daniel
