I am just waiting to receive my new 14" G4 ibook with integrated airport extreme wireless card, and am considering wireless networking.
My desktop PC runs on windows and has BT Yahoo broadband, and is a straight connection through a BT voyager modem to the filter into the phone socket.
If i were to purchase the standard recommended router from BT would my ibook be compatible with this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Matt
It should be. Besides the network settings, such as specifying DHCP (or not) for IP addresses, the only other you have be careful about is encryption. If you decide to turn on encryption, make sure that the encryption scheme set for the router matches that set for the iBook and any other wireless devices. You might want to get your network set up and working first without encryption, and then turning that feature on. I bring this up because another user had the same or similar equipment as you are planning to get, and had problems which were solved be redoing the encryption settings on the router.
Here's an Apple article which may help:

So once you setup the router with encryption, having your Mac join the network shouldn't be a problem. I think the user who had problems may have accidentally changed the router settings.
Here's another article which relates to a potential problem:

While you won't be using an Airport base station the basic issue is still the same as outlined in that article.
Once you get past the basic sharing of the internet connection, the networking of both your computers won't be much of a hassle. Mac OS 10.4.x makes it a lot easier than it was in the "old days". If you have either Win 2k or XP on your desktop, it won't be hard on that end either.
I strongly suggest that while you are waiting for your new Mac that you become familiar with what is available here:

Apple's site is pretty good I think. Yoou especially want to become familiar with this part:

You will note specific references about Windows networks.
I hope this helps.
