TICKET ARCHIVE -> Nexstar External 3.5" Firewire Hd Enclosure Not Mounting

Hello,

I've just recently purchased a new NexStar ( NexStar 1, no number after it ) firewire/USB 2.0 external harddrive enclosure. The internal hard drive is a Maxtor 60GB. The computer I'm trying to connect it to is a 550MHz TiBook, running 10.4.2.

I installed the hard drive as per instructions in the manual, but it will not mount. System Profiler lists the device as "Unknown Device" with "Up to 400 Mb/sec" Maximum and Connection speeds. I've zapped the Perimeter RAM, fixed the permissions on my internal hard drive ( but not the external hard drive since it isn't visible in Disk Utility )

I've also connected the hard drive to an older iMac running 10.3 and it did not mount there either, similarly not showing up in Disk Utility or in the System Profiler as a known device.

I've also tried turning the hard drive off for five minutes, disconnecting it, turning it on again and then connecting it to the computer, turning the hard drive and computer off and disconnecting it, waiting five minutes then booting the computer with the hard drive connected and powered up, and other variations on that theme. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,
Michael

Michael, welcome on macosx.com

When it fails to mount, is it connected through a FW port or an USB one ?
Could you try to connect it using the other kind of interface: I mean, if fails on FW, try to mount it as USB

Philippe

Hello, I've tried to mount it using USB, and using USB and Firewire on a non-macintosh machine and it didn't work. So I've decided to return the enclosure and I'm going to muck about with the hard drive it self and ensure that I've got that working.

Thank you very much for your help.

Michael, if it does not mound in USB, nor FW:
* there is still a jumper on the drive forcing it into slave (or master); remove it
* be sure the hard drive itself is spinning up...well should do if a new stuff ;-)

Hello,

I've tried it without any jumpers on and it still does not mount on the desktop. It does spin up when I power it, I can hear the whirring noise, and the light on the enclosure goes from red ( initially ) to green after about half a minute. I've tried this with both usb and fire wire connections to no avail.

I do have a correction to make to my original posting, however. I have an IBM Deskstar 60GB hard drive, not a maxtor.

Thanks,
Michael

So Michael, the drive had jumpers on it when you open the enclosure ?
Do you have som technical doc on the hardrive ? Could you put a jumper to force the drive to be in slavc mode ?
regards
Philippe
