Description:
I just installed WindowsNT 4.0 on my machine. I also have Windows95. However, I'm having a problem setting up my modem and sound card in NT. It can't even detect that either are there.. Everything is peachy in Windows95.. What's up with NT? Also, with having two operating systems on my computer, do I have to install products like MS Office twice? I'm getting errors when making a shortcut from NT to my origional Office programs.. HELP!

Hi Kyle,

Your WinNT install will not automatically detect sound cards or modems. WinNT is NOT plug and play, as is Win95. You will need to get WinNT4-specific drivers for your hardware (sometimes, but not always, the driver is the same for WinNT4 and Win95. Check the web site of the manufacturer for the drivers.)

To answer part 2 - yes, you will have to install MS Office (and any other Windows software) again. The install routines dump files into the windows\system directory, (or, under WinNT, winnt\system32). Therefore, these files need to be in both locations for the software to boot under either OS. You can use the same main install directory (like c:\program files\msoffice) for the program files, so not everything is duplicated. The programs look for certain files in the active system directory.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for using No Wonder!
