I recently purchased a Xerox WorkCentre M940 printer/copier/scanner ($1.00 at a garage sale). Is there a printer driver available for this unit - I am running OS X 10.3.9 on a G4 iMac, and on a G3 iMac. Will gimp-print (aka gutenprint) work? Xerox does not seem to offer any drivers for this unit.

Thanks so much for your time!

Hi Marty,
I'm Greg, your Volunteer Tech. I sincerely enjoy helping people set up their Mac so they can enjoy using it. I try, through a series of short interactions with you, to get enough information to help you. Please don't expect me to solve the problem without giving me more info or not telling me when I haven't yet fixed the problem.

I haven't found a driver for this model, but, many WorkCentres are HP-compatible, which means they use the HP PCL page description language (different from the postscript language).
I suggest you try the HP Laserjet 5 Series, Gimp-Print driver.
Have you figured out which comm protocols this printer uses? I suspect it uses the IP printing/LPR and IP printing/HP Jetdirect protocols, and I'd recommend trying jetdirect first (you need to set/know the IP address).

Thanks so much for the quick response. I will try your suggestion with the HP Laserjet 5/gimp-print driver. Not sure what you mean about comm protocols - this printer has a USB port, do I still need the IP address? Thanks again!

I didn't know it has USB.
(so, it uses USB comm and not a network comm protocol)

After more searching, I think there is some possibility this is a repackaged Lexmark (which may not be HP compatible).

Thanks again for the quick and helpful response. Let me know if you find out anything more about the Lexmark compatibility. Have a great day!

Marty,
Good news (I think)!!!
The printer part of this is HP PCL-3 compatible!
I recommend you install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript driver pair, from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
Now, The hard part. You'll have to experiment with Xerox or HP model drivers, because there isn't an exact model choice for M940 in there. I'd start by using the HP Deskjet 890 choice. If that isn't good, try downloading the PPD for the Docuprint M750 from here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...DocuPrint_M750
To use the PPD, choose Other for model, which gives you a File Selector to navigate to the PPD and select it.

Good luck.

Once again, thanks for all your help and sage advice. As it turns out, the printer is completely out of ink. As soon as I can afford to purchase some, I will try your suggestions. Thanks again. Have a great day!
