Hi I have the following Mac G4
Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.6f2
and I have OS 10.3.9
I just bought an HP2800 and I cannot get it to talk to my Mac, the software loaded really quick. I wonder if it is not compatible, and now after looking into this printer more I am thinking I may want a Canon I9900 instead as I do a lot with photos and they and their users are saying photos are awesome. But I want to check first to see if I'll have any problems with this model of Canon and my Mac. Any advice help I will appreciate.
Thanks, Becky

Becky,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you, but I need more information.
Exactly what kind of HP 2800 do you have? Business inkjet, Designjet, color laserjet ? Or is it a Photosmart printer?

Becky,
The best way to locate your account is to use our online account doctor. Using the Account Doctor you can find your username by searching for it using your email address to display the results. If you don't find a match, try a different email address that you may have registered with.
If you know your username and would like to find out your email you used to register with, you can use the account doctor as well.

As for your HP driver:
First go to:
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr/
And download Printer Setup Repair 4.2.1
Once installed, have it delete all the printers and preferences (I am assuming you do not have any other printers).
Now go here to download the latest driver for your HP.
HP driver
Once installed, go to Print Setup and add the printer (if it doesn't com up automatically). You should be able to print now.

Okay, I'm now on my Mac, I downloaded the fixamacsoftware. But I can't figure out how to have it delete all the printers and preferences.
Looks like they want me to buy a license?
I did have this Mac hooked up to a different printer but it is now disconnected.
Thanks, Becky

Okay, I did the trial thing and it let me go in... since my other printer was an hp too I deleted all hp printers and drivers.
Do I really have to go to the URL you gave me or can I just reload the software from the manufacture?
Thanks in advance. Becky

Becky,
You found a file in Home>Library>Preferences? Go ahead and delete the file manually. In fact, delete all HP files you have found.
I recommend you get the driver from the web site, as that just maybe more up to date than what is on the CD that came with the printer.
HP driver
If this link does not work, go to here
http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/supp...isplay=drivers
type in Inkjet 2800. You will then be brought to a page with a long list of different printers. Select Business Inkjet 2800.
You will then be brought to another page. Select Macintosh OS X. It will bring you to the page to download the driver.

Hi Cheryl
I got print results for illustrator and photoshopcs as they are running in OSX however my Quark files that were created in Classic 9 are still looking for the other printer. Is there a way to get Quark to run on OSX?
I tried reloading Quark but it is still in Classic 9. I have a lot of Quark files that I was hoping to run and print in 10 now and I don't know how do do this. Can you help me with this one?
Thanks, Becky

Becky,
We have half the problem solved and that is good.
It sounds like you have Quark for OS 9. The only way to get it to work in OS X is to get the OS X version.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6319
I must warn you that some people are experiencing trouble with the OS X version.
OR you can install the OS 9 printer driver and Quark will be able to print in Classic/OS 9.
HP OS 9 driver
You have to start up Classic to install. Then restart Classic. Then go to the Chooser to select the printer and port. You should be all set. Remember to go to Page setup before you print for the first time in Classic.

Looks like I still need some of your expert help. On the OS9 I think I need to know how to disconnect the old printer from chooser... I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried to delete some files, but it is still there and the 2800 is not in chooser, and I don't know how to get it in there. Can't remember how I did it before.
Even if the old one is there it might not matter if I can get the new one in there to choose, am I right?
OSX is printing except for Quark files which is in Classic 9
Thanks again, Becky

Becky,
When you installed the OS 9 driver, it should have put all the printing drivers for that printer in System Folder(with the 9 on the folder icon)>Extensions.
Go to that folder, and before you try to look for the printer files, go to the view menu and select by list. Now everything is in alpha order, making it easier to locate files.
Scroll down and look for the HP 2800. If you no longer have the other printer, you can delete that particular model.
I do have one question. Can you start up your Mac in OS 9? I ask, because I tried to install my HP printer to classic, and it did not install correctly to select a printer in the chooser. A strange predicament.
What I am doing is downloading my OS 9 driver via my OS 9 web browser, just to see if it handles differently or not.

To answer your question, yes I can start, restart my Mac in classic 9.
I'm a little confused but I'll try and follow your instructions, I get a little lost looking for files.
Will I have to load printer software on to classic 9 too?
I could see the printer icon on the desktop but it was not in the chooser when I went to print a quark file..

Becky,
When you put everything in the window in alpha order, it makes things much easier. I use by list - or Alpha when I am looking for a specific file.
HP recommends a strange way of installing OS 9 drivers when you have OS X installed. It is so complicated and with many restarts that it isn't funny. I won't even give you those instructions.
If you can not find the HP Inkjet 2800 in the extensions folder, I recommend this:
Find that OS 9 driver that you downloaded. The name on the files is: bi2816en.sit.hqx
Move it to the Applications (MacOS 9) folder.
Start up in OS 9.
Expand the file by finding the directory where the file was saved. Double click on the file.
Copy the expanded file "HP Business Inkjet 2800.ppd" into
System Folder (with the 9 on the folder icon)>Extensions>Printer Descriptions directory.
Identify the printer by running the Desktop Printer Utility under Applications(Mac OS 9) >Utilities.
Launch the Desktop Printer Utility.
i. Identify your connection type - Printer (USB) or Printer (AppleTalk).
ii. Identify your printer on the connection, click Auto Setup (or manually browse to the folder where "HP Business Inkjet 2800.ppd" was stored to select the printer's PPD name).
iii. Click "Create".
9. Close the Desktop Printer Utility naming your printer in the process
10. Go to the chooser and see if the printer is listed. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the Mac via a network or USB connection.
If not, you will have to restart the computer (Restarting will stay in OS 9). Now check the Chooser. Select the printer and USB port. Close the chooser.
Now you can restart in OS X. The printer should be all set and working in classic.
