We have a problem with printing in Mac OS 10.4. The configuration is the following: a Mac mini and a HP Deskjet 5740 within a network with an iMac G5.

Before the deskjet was connected to an iMac G5 with Mac OS 10.3, everything works perfectly in that configuration. Now we are trying to connect the same printer to the mini, but after installing the latest driver from HP (downloaded from their website) printing from the mini to the 5740 doesn't work. When given the print command the print button is not responding, the only way out is hitting the cancel button and ending with no print.

Also when we try to print with network printing, and the 5740 printer is connected to the iMac G5. When trying to print from the mini is also not working.

A strange thing is, when the 5740 is connected to the mini, and you try to print via network printing from the iMac G5, printing does work!

Printing a test page from the mini with the HP utility is - odd enough- working. We tried to print from several applications, like texteditor, safari and Word but in all applications it's not possible to push the print button.

All in all a very strange situation and we don't know what to do. We want to be able to print directly from the mini to the 5740 and this still doesn't work. Do you have a solution?

I've heard of something like this before - it was a conflict caused by a plugin.
Go to the folder /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins and delete any file that has Xerox in the name.
If that doesn't work, come back and we'll do more troubleshooting.

Thank you for your answer. However, I found the folder /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins but it has no content. It's empty. Another hint?

This time try -
Reset Printing System, a menu choice in Printer Setup Utility, found above Quit Printer Setup. Then restart the Mac, then ADD the printer in Printer Setup again, and try it.

If this doesn't do it, my last idea is to reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option in the installer. (There are 100,000 files in OS X - and we don't have many tools to figure out which one is corrupted.)

Good luck.
