TICKET ARCHIVE -> Problem Reinstalling Os 9 From Dual-os Installer Disk

Hi There,

I have posted the following question on the 'Mac OS X System & Mac Software' forum (the post is 'Fixing OS 9 under OS X') but didn't receive a response so I hope you can help.

I'm currently running an eMac which originally came with a dual-OS install disk for OS 9.2.2 and OS X (before they were phased out). I've since upgraded OS X to 10.2.8 but I now need to reinstall OS 9 due to some old programs on my system corrupting the OS 9 system files. My problem is that the install disk doesn't appear to have an option to reinstall just OS 9 - from the installer it looks like it would also reinstall OS X as well - so I would like to know if there is any way to just install this on it's own.

Any help or advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Many thanks - and keep up the good work!

Neil,

I apologize for the no response on your forum post, but most of the people who read the forum threads are either on vacation - or working on the free mac support side.

My suggestion is to use Pacifist. You can download it from here:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812

Startup Pacifist, then insert your OS X CD Disk 1.
Now in the Pacifist window click on Open Package.
A new window will open. Click on the Mac Install CD icon.
You want to Extract Install OS 9 from the OS install. Doing a find may locate it faster. If find does not find it, you may need to look in each folder.
Take your time as it may be hidden in Installation, System, or Essentials.
Once you have found the file, install the files to their default locations on the main hard disk where the Installer would place them, choose “Install Files to Default Locations” from the File menu.

Hint: - you will need to trash the System Folder (Mac OS 9) before you can install. Or rename it Previous System Folder - then you can move over preference files that hold registrations, extra fonts, and extensions, etc.

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for your help - after opening up the installation packages I was unable to find anything resembling an 'OS 9' or 'Classic' installer (even using Pacifist's Find option) so I tried the Software Restore disks and that seems to have done the trick. The reason why I hadn't used them originally was because I had assumed that they worked in a similar way to a 'ghost' disk (that restores the system to it's original installation state and so loses everything in the process). In case you haven't seen it, the restore allows you to reinstall only certain components (such as OS 9, the i-Applications, the games, etc.) and directs you back to the software install disk if you need anything else.

In any case, I'm sure Pacifist will definitely come in handy for the future. Now that I've sorted the problem out I'll put a reply on my original message so if someone picks the thread up from a search engine they'll at least get a possible answer. The other (slight) hiccup is that, once installed, OS X doesn't 'bless' the new OS 9 system folder but will allow you to select it in the Classic Support options. In any case, the solution was to boot up in the old OS 9, change the start-up disk to the new OS 9 then change the start-up disk (again) to get back into OS X.

Thanks again,

Neil Withnall

Neil,

I am glad that you got OS 9 back on your system and it works properly.

It is tricky to find the exact package you need from the OS install CDs. The OS 9 install is probably hidden in a folder somewhere on those disks.

I had previously helped someone to find iChat to reinstall. He could not find it, so I pulled out my disks and spent some time searching for the exact package he needed. I can not offer that to you as I do not have the combo disks that you have.

Some restore disks do return the hard drive to default. You must have gotten a newer version of the restore and for that I am glad.
