Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Performa 6320
RAM: 16meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
Recently I suffered a hard disk crash (I have a 1.1 gig drive). I used Norton Utilities to recover some files but most were lost (I don't have a lot of cash to invest in Zips for back up). I wiped the drive and started over, reinstalling all the software, but because my OS 8 CD won't boot the computer, I have to install 7.5.3. and upgrade to OS 8! Always a pain. All seemed to be going well, when about 5 days later, I almost had a second crash. Again, I used Disk Doctor to repair the damaged files (or replaced them). I haven't had a third crash yet, but my Mac is showing some strange symptoms. Everytime I boot up (not restart) it rebuilds the desktop, and when I use Disk Doctor to check the system everything seems to check out okay, but it tells me my Desktop file/folder has either a bad creation or modification date. I fix the problem only to have it show up again later in the day or the next day. I've been using the Internet since April and to the best of my knowledge do not have a virus (I use Disinfectant on a regular basis). The only recent changes to my patterns are 1) I've been playing Diablo on Battle.net occasionally, and 2) I've been using TTConverter to change Windows True Type fonts to Mac TT fonts. I don't know if this is a program conflict or if my drive is just on it's way out. Any suggestions?

Roland,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is

The MAC OS Easy Open extension seems to be related to this problem. Here's an excerpt from Extension Overload:
"This extension may cause your computer to attempt to rebuild the desktop every time it starts up. If this happens to you, the solution is to restart with all extensions disabled except Macintosh Easy Open and manually rebuild the desktop (by holding down command-option just before the Finder loads). Then restart again normally with your normal set of extensions. If you are using AutoDoubler or DiskDoubler, you should also keep those extensions enabled during the desktop rebuild, or your compressed files will end up with generic icons."

My favorite Mac troubleshooting bible, "Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters" by Ted Landau, also suggests the Mac OS Easy Open extension as a possible cause for this symptom.

Follow the advice and hope for the best.
Good luck,
ed
