TICKET ARCHIVE -> Problems Printing Text--illustrator 10/ Mac Osx 10.3

Since installing OSX 10.3, I cannot printout text from Illustrator 10 via my laser printer, a Brother HL-5170DN. I can print text with other applications---MS Word, Quickbooks---but with Illustrator 10, I get pages of gibberish code at the top of endless printed pages. If I convert text to outlines---no problem---but that's no real solution, as I cannot edit it later. Any suggestions?

Howdy!

Looks like you need to download updates for your printer for 10.3 Panther, and here they are--four in all!

http://global.solutions.brother.com/dl_search/dl_search

Download these and you should be able to print.

I noticed in your comments you said you had a second response, but I don't see it here?

I don't know what rabbit hole my "second response" went down. My first response is still listed:
------------------------
A respondent linked me to the Brother website. I'm not sure which---in a long series of downloads and patches listed---I need. The cups3 files enable the printer to print, but the type is NOT postscript, so it's not acceptable. I can't get the br3 files to print out---so the problem above remains. What specific downloads do I need?
------------------------
To clarify, with the cups3 driver, the type is bitmapped---there has been a substantial loss in quality with the upgrade to OSX 10.3. I cannot printout with the correct br3 driver (unless I convert text to outlines). The tech guy at Brother was at a loss and there has been no followup from their end. I may try to upgrade to Illustrator CS to see if that circumvents the problem.

To summarize:
1) I've tried the drivers and patches I found on the Brother website and nothing resolved the problem.
2) I'm considering upgrading to Illustrator CS (from 10.0).
3) I'm considering reverting to OSX 10.2.3 (although this seems like a pain to carry out).

Do you have other specific remidies I might pursue?

Try printing out a pdf file (save that illustrator as pdf) and see if it can handle that.

I'm wondering if Brother isn't supporting postscript printing past 10.2? I'll have to look into it.

Nat:

It hadn't occurred to me to test a pdf document (from an Illustrator 10.0 file). Selecting the Generic Postscript Printer in Page Setup, I printed out a Postscript Error message. Selecting the Brother HL-5170DN BR-Script driver, I couldn't print at all!

If I convert all text to outlines in an Illustrator 10.0 document, I can print out just fine with either driver.

Brother Tech Support did e-mail me the following directive yesterday, which I tried, but it didn't make any difference. I was puzzled by the directive to drag the Printers folder to the desktop (from the Library) where it is to remain? These were their directives:
-------------------------------------------------------------

If you are still experiencing printing problems with you HL-5170DN after you upgraded your computer, you may want to repair the systems permissions if you did not do so after the upgrade.

Delete the Brother printer from the Print Center.

1. Open the Hard Drive, Applications, Utilities, and then Print Center.

2. Click once on the Brother Printer icon to highlight it, click Delete, and Close the Print Center.

Repair Permissions:

1. Open the Hard Drive, Applications, Utilities, and Disk Utility

2. Click on the First Aid tab.

3. Click on the Hard Drive Icon on the left windowpane.

4. Click on Repair Disk Permissions. (Depending on the size of
the Hard Drive and the number of files, this can take some time to complete.)

Remove Printer Driver files:

1. Open the Hard Drive, Library and Drag the Printers folder to
the desktop.

2. Restart the computer.

Download and install the latest Brother Printer Driver from
http://solutions.brother.com.

Have the Printer directly connected and powered on. Restart the computer when prompted after installation. Open the Print Center,

Add the printer if not automatically added. Try printing.
-------------------------------------------------------------

I'm still confused as to what the correct drivers are. The CUPS driver bitmaps text; the BR-Script driver on their website is for Windows. So I downloaded the PPD for OSX 10.3 and I did get a BR-Script driver.

Any further insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

You move the printer folder to desktop to make sure your system uses whatever new drivers you need to install.

I would locate an move all your brother descriptions/install files to your trash, but DO NOT DELETE and remember their locations, then reinstall the software Brother is recommending.

You could have conflicts with different software installed if you do not do a "fresh install".

Let me know what happens.
