Is this a problem with my internal battery or is something else going on?

I consistantly lose my links in programs like Quark. My working files are on a Mac ethernet system but I am also connected to the company mainframe (PC) system. I access my email an internet through the PC system.

The links mysteriously "break" in the middle of the work day. Sometimes my date and time change in the middle of the day. They do not change or break when I reboot or shut down the system, making me wonder if it is something besides the battery.

Our backups are done with a piggy back system through the PC system. I am still on system 9.2 but am on a G4 Mac( one year old).

None of the other Macs on the system have this problem and our IS guys can't figure it out but I noticed it happening when we went to this back up system. We back up automatically at night and we never shut our systems down and sometimes my links are broken the following morning, but not always.

Can you help?

Jan,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. It sounds like you have some system files that are not staying connected to your mainframe.

What are you doing when the computer mysteriously breaks connection?

Have you run a Utility lately on your machine? Norton Utilities for OS 9 or Tech Tool Pro for OS 9 will work to scan your hard drive and repair what needs to be repaired. You need the CD of either one, starting up the computer with the CD (insert CD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key).

For now, you can try rebuilding the desktop files. To do this, restart the computer and immediately hold down the Option and Apple keys on your keyboard. Continue to hold these two keys down as the computer starts up until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to rebuild the desktop. This will appear after the extension icons load at the bottom of your screen.

Now release the keys and click on the okay button. Give the computer a test run and let me know if this corrects things.

Let me know if you need further assistance and thank you for using MacOSX.com !
