I used backup 3.0 to back up iphoto library (iphoto 6.0). When I tried to restore I get the message that it was restored successfully. However, when I open iphoto I can only see the thumbnails. The original pictures are corrupt.

Hi Eric,

Even though you restored them you still need to move them in:
yourusername -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library ->Modified (for modified ones)
yourusername -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library ->Originals (for not modified ones)
Hope this helps,

Ferdinand

I have already tried that with no luck. The files embedded in the backup files look like they are corrupt. If you show package contents to get to the backup.sparseimage you can't see all the files that are there. Interestingly the backup files are broken into 4 parts 1 gig each plus 7 incremental backups totaling 8 gigs. If I show package content for part 1 (for example) the show info tells me that there is 1 gig size. When I double click on it to open it and get the actual folder the get info on all the folders and files embedded tell me its 26.9mb. Where did all the other data go? The jpeg files that I am able to see when I click on them, I get a corrupt file message.

in addition the size of the backup folder is 8 gigs the size of the completely restored folder with corrupt image files is 5 gigs. What happened to the other 3 gigs?

I think the 3 gigs got lost because of the corrupt images. I am not sure, so I will re-open this issue so other techs can give you other ideas. Sorry I couldn't help anymore than this...

the corrupt image files are still there. so that does not explain how 3 gigs got lost. I also don't understand how some image files got corrupted using backup and others did not. since the files are stored in a backup format is there a way to fix this?

Did you try to repair permissions?

Of course I repaired permissions. I even did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.4.8 and iPhoto 6.0 to the latest version. Still no luck. It still does not explain how the backup file folder has 8 gigs and when unpacked expanded and restored there is only 5 gigs. How is it that some pictures are corrupted and others are not? Is there any other program that can deal with Mac's backup folder? Does apple have anything to offer?

Apple offers a Backup application called BackUp. Its icon is an orange rainbow.
see this page:

Its easy to use and very practical.
About your question why 3 gigs are lost, I really have no clue. I will reopen this issue now.
