Newcomer to Mac with iBook G4. Roller coaster of emotions. Hard to adjust after 15 years with PC. Anyway, I hope you'll be able to help me here. I want to download Media Player for Mac. It downloads it and put it on the desk top as a .sitx file. I double click on it but the pop-up window says "There is no default application specified to open the document Windows Media.sitx 19-05-25". Along with the computer I bought Mac OSX The Missing Manual. It says that if you use Safari as your web browser, you don't have to worry about it. It's not working. I tried many times, without success. I really need that program.
Thanks.

Hi Lucie -
Welcome to the mac fold! Well your Missing Mac OS X Manual *was* correct before Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) came along. There used to be a program called "Stuffit Expander" which was included with previous versions of Mac OS X which handles unpacking the .sitx file you have. As of 10.4 however they stopped bundling it. However you can download it from Version Tracker for free (you can
click here to download it). Once you've installed Stuffit Expander, double-click your Media Player .sitx file and it should open just fine for you.
Thanks for choosing macosx.com!

Brian. Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. However (my mistake), I forgot to mention that The Missing Manual is in fact Tiger Edition. I read some of the posts here regarding .sit extension and StuffIt but I thought it was not necessary to get it with OS 10.4. We called Apple and they sent me to the Windows Media Player download website and told me to follow the directions, which I did. I am missing Windows XP right now....

Hi Lucie -
Well, XP and OS X *are* very different as you're noticing! But stick with it, I'm sure you'll come to love the mac experience as we all do!
So did getting Stuffit Expander solve the current problem at least? If not let me know and we'll see what else we can do to help!

Brian, I downloaded Stuffit EXP 902 and will install it as soon as I find out what is the Administrator password. Can't remember it and can't find it anywhere. It says I can use the Mac OS X Install disk. I will give it a try.

Hi Lucie -
Yeah any time you want to make system changes you'll often get prompted for that pesky Administrator password. Since you have the Mac OS X Install disk though, changing it is easy - there's a nice page here that explains it:

Brian, many thanks. The download and installation successful. The problem now is that after launching Media Player and connecting an error occurs : The application Windows Media Player quit unexpectedly. I click Reopen without more success.

Hi Lucie -
Another tech has seen a similar problem and I re-post here an exerpt of his response (where WMP refers to Windows Media Player). Try this
Delete the WMP preference files...
There are two files, both located in Home->Library->Preferences
Look for and delete these files:
com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist
Windows Media Player Prefs
Try launching Windows Media Player again and see how you go.
