PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Gateway
MODEL: Pentium P5-90
RAM: 64meg
OS VERSION: Windows 95
SERVICE PACK: "the first one"
DESCRIPTION:
Scandisk starts up on its own after the computer has been on for more than 4-6 hours. Usually, it happens when I leave the system on overnight; I might have had a huge download before I went to bed, etc.
When I come back in the morning, I've got a blue DOS screen asking for a diskette in drive a:, then press Enter. I hit the Esc key and the blue screen disappears and I get back to Win95 & ScanDisk continuing on to drive c:
FWIW, I have two physical hard drives, the first is a 2.5gb partitioned into 3 logical drives (c:, e:, & f

, the second is a 1gb drive (d

. I have a diskette drive a: and a cd-rom drive g:. Win95 also "recognizes" drive b:, which I do not have and cannot get Win95 to un-recognize (it shows up on ScanDisk, Explorer, & Norton Utilities NDD; maybe others too). I checked the CMOS; no b: drive.
Is this ScanDisk set up on a schedule? How the heck do I kill this thing?
Yes it is set on a schedule and yes you can remove it (or if you were using UNIX you could "Kill" it). If you look in the system tray (lower right - it has icons in it) click on the one that has a blue line a white background and a red circle in the bottom right - its called task scheduler. When it opens you will probably find that disk defrag is listed there - remove it. This should work but if it doesnt check under accessories, system tools (task scheduler should be there too) and then check the settings for defragmenter there should be a way to turn it off.
Hope this helps and if you need further assistance let me know.
