Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple/Umax
Model: Performa 6400
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
My Umax Astra 1200S scanner decided not to work today. When I try to make the scan I get a dialog box that says "Scanner not found or not ready. Check cable connections, SCSI ID. Restart the scanner and redo scanning [OK]" I checked the connections and they all look fine. I restarted and retried the scan numerous times. I rebuilt the desktop and zapped the PRAM, and I trashed the scanner preference file. The scanner (hardware) is still set to its factory setting #5, but I don't know how to check what the computer thinks it is. (I would like to know, even if that is not the trouble!) I have the computer plugged into a good quality APS surge supressor, but the scanner has a adapter box, and that is only plugged into a little strip surge supressor - I wonder if she got blown out in a storm. Do you have any suggesions? . . . . THANK YOU!

Beverly,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is
Your instincts are right: the first thing you want to do is to check the SCSI bus. To do this, download a freeware utility, called SCSI Probe from ZDNet Mac Download at

SCSI Probe will tell you what is on the bus, and will even mount SCSI devices that for some reason got unmounted.
Electrical damage to the scanner is, to my mind, quite low on the list of probably problems.
Good luck,
ed
