Running 10.3.8 - all current security updates - on a Power Mac G4 - mirror drive doors dual 1 GHZ with 1.5 GB of RAM. Apple 20" flat display

I was recently experiencing numerous intermittent wake from sleep issues... (Yes, I ran disk permissions, checked hard drive with disk utility etc).... what was happening is that when I went to the log in window (which came up just fine), typed in my password (also ok), my startup screen appeared ok BUT no menu bar or any other desktop icon would appear... just the spinning beach ball. The only way to get back to work was to do a hard restart.

I finally called Apple Tech support and they told me to remove the PowerManagement plist located in the System Configuraton folder( which is in the Preferences folder inside the Library folder for the system). I trashed the appropriate plist file and since then no more wake from sleep issues... HOWEVER... when my system sleeps, there is no longer any screen saver activity... just a dark screen... which works but I miss my screen saver (a standard apple screen saver not a 3rd party)...

My question is what app or activity will generate a new powermanagement pref??? I have tried messing with the energy saver and reclicking new screen savers to no avail.... any ideas???

Thanks!

Curtis,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

First, go to your Home folder>Library folder> Preference folder> By Host folder. Now go to the view menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order.
Locate and trash all the com.apple.screensaver......plist files. Empty the trash.

Now open the System Preferences. Click on energy saver and adjust the slider under Put the computer to sleep and Put the display to sleep. If you want the screen saver to run constantly move the sliders to never. Also uncheck the Put the hard disk to sleep. Now under options, uncheck all the boxes.

Next, click on the show all icon and go to Desktop & Screen Saver. Click on the Screen Saver tab and make your selections. make sure you set the Start Screen Saver slider to your choice. 5 minutes is a good time unless you want the computer to wait a bit longer before starting the screen saver.

Click on the Hot corners button and make your selections there. Usually the lower left corner is for forcing the screen saver to start immediately.

Now close the System Preferences and just to test things out, move the mouse to the lower left corner of the screen.

The screen saver should start up.

Thank you... your method did bring back the com.apple.powermanagement.plist file but still no screen saver.. I am trying to get the screen saver to activate after 5 minutes of inactivity and NOT when I activate it by going to a corner. All I am getting now is the dark screen after inactivity....

Curtis,

We are half way there.

What happens when you put the curser to the corner? Do you still get a black screen?

Go to Home folder> Library Folder>Preferences
trash the com.apple.desktop.plist file. Empty the trash.

Double check the Energy Saver panel. Make sure you have uncheck Put the display to sleep and put the "Put Computer to sleep" to never.

Open the System Preferences, select Desktop & Screen Saver. In Desktop select your picture or pattern for the dekstop. Select the Screen Saver button. Select a different screen saver and then click on the test button. Does the test work correctly?
