I am using a wireless network at my home to access the internet from my laptop. The router has a password and basic security enabled. I have no idea how to set up my laptop to protect my tax and financial records while I am on line.

Sometimes when I turn on my wireless I see another wireless access point. I want to be sure that my laptop is protected and if someone tried to access it I would know.

I also want to know that if I log into another router my data is reasonably safe.

Can you please point me in the right direction?

Using 10.3.8

Thank you

Steve

Steve,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

OS 10.3.8 has a Firewall built in that works along with your router firewall.

Go to System Preferences, the light switch in the dock, and select Sharing. When that panel opens, click on the Firewall button. Make sure it says Firewall On. If not, click on the start button.
Click on the Show All icon.
Now to be able to download go to the Network Pane. Select Network Status under the Show pull down menu. Now click on your connection, and go to the bottom of the screen and click on the Config button.
A new panel will open. Click on the proxies button. At the bottom of that panel is Use Passive FTP Mode. Make sure that box is checked.

Click on the Show All icon and then select FileVault. Here is where you can lock your home folder from everyone. Set the master password, then turn FileVault on. Your files are now protected. You can select one of the different options at the bottom of this panel. If you are the only person using this computer, you need not worry about those options.

As for seeing another wireless access - this is just some one else's wireless signal. Your computer is showing you the signals that it sees. This does not mean that some one is trying to access your computer. With your firewalls in place, and the password needed to log into your wireless modem, you are protected.
