TICKET ARCHIVE -> Sharing a External Hard Disk From Pc to Mac

Hi,
I`m running out of alternatives here. I`ve already posted this problem in several forums with no result.

I have a network with a D-Link router, and it consists of a PC (running on Window XP Pro) and a PowerMac G5 (on MacOS X Tiger).

The PC has an external hard drive connected to it, driver E: , which I`m trying to share with the Mac. Here`s the problem:

Anything I want to share in the C: driver of the PC I just configure to doing so. I`ve set up advanced file sharing mode, and go to the file, security and sharing, and make it available.

On the Mac, in Network, I can see all the files I`ve made available. It even lists as an option the files of the external hard disk, but if I try to access one, it pops up a window saying: The alias "Bernardo" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. (Bernardo is the name of my PC).

Alternatively, if I go to Go>Connect to Server, and connect to my PC, if I try to open a folder of the E: driver it says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -41)"

Again I have no problem seeing and sharing all the files I want to make available in the C: driver. I can see listed the files of the E: driver I`ve made available, even the driver itself (which I`ve made available also), but the above error messages appear in the case I choose a folder of the external driver.

I`m sure you can share an external hard disk of one computer with another computer, so what`s my problem?

Please, please help me.

Gratefully,

If you want to share a drive that is mounted on the XP machine, don't you right click that and select sharing and then make the whole drive available? I really don't understand what you are trying to do perhaps. But when I wanted to share an entire drive on my XP box, I justed right clicked on it, selected scharing from the menu and then set the access privileges. If this has been done correctly the drive should show up as shared when you view it in My Computer.

Also you might want to take a look at this:

That's just my problem. I'm sure I'm doing the necessary steps to share the driver. As I said, by doing the exact same steps I can make any folder in the C: driver available to the Mac. ONLY folders on the E: driver appear listed on the Mac, but when an attempt is made to access it the above error messages appear.

The second error message, that says error code -41; doesn't that give you any clue?

The Apple site doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. But thanks for the help, and grateful if you could help me further.

Yours,

Here's what it says in the official listing of error codes:

"-41 mFulErr Memory full (open) or file won't fit (load)"

So according to this, there isn't sufficient memory to load the file from that external drive. So what sort of files are these big video or graphics files? In any case, your Mac is interpreting those files as too big to fit in it's available memory.
If you don't feel that should be the case, then why not connect the extermal drive to your Mac and access the files on that drive directly?

It's possible that there's a problem with the Mac OS X installation; was Tiger installed using the Erase and Install Option (clean) or was this an upgrade install?
Also, there is an update to 10.4.2 available. I suggest you try installing that. It's also possible that there's an incompatibility or bug in 10.4 which gnerates the memory full error message falsely.

A followup:

There's a combo update for 10.4.2 available. You can find it here:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1042combo.html

Some other clients have found this particular version of the update solved some networking problems they had. It may just solve your problem.
