DESCRIPTION:

Being a Mac user all my life, I am baffled by a quirk in my lap top, which runs Win 98. The majority of the time, when I close Windows to shut down the computer, the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer" appears and I push the button and the computer turns off. However, every once in awhile, I get the same message for a brief instant and the computer SHUTS ITSELF off. Is this normal? Am wondering if I have a glitch with Windows 98 (it came pre-installed), or the computer. Also, don't know whether this is related or not, but when I try to restart, the Windows screen comes up and freezes, causing me to shut off the computer and boot up again. Other than these seemilngly minor problems, the system runs great and I haven't had any other operating snafus.

Thanks so much for your help, this is the 1st time I've used this site and I think its GREAT!

Sincerely,
Gary Jorgensen

Hi Gary, welcome to No Wonder!

If your laptop has a "standby" or "resume" feature, then your computer's self-shutdown's are normal. You can disable these easily in Control Panel or some other utility that your laptop has. Actually, they shouldn't be shutdowns, but rather suspends, where your current desktop environment is saved (basically, it dumps the memory to disk). So after you power back up, everything should look exactly (more or less) like it was before it shutdown.

Of course, if that's not happening, then you've really got a problem here.

Check to see if your laptop came with any "power-saving" software or utilities. If they have any sort of auto-shutdown features, then disable those.

If it keeps shutting down, then... uh oh.

Your startup glitch might be a problem with some drivers that Win98 is trying to load. Edit your C:\msdos.sys and locate the line that says "Logo=1" or something. Change the value to 0. Save, and reboot. It won't bring up the logo anymore on bootup, so you can see which driver causes the freeze. (I think)

I just think it's odd that you're willing to give up a Mac for a PC. I hate my PC. =)

Hope this helps. Contact me if it doesn't, or if anything else bombs.
