This has been a problem since Tiger was released. 17" PowerBook fails to wake after an overnight sleep - the hardisk stars up, but the screen remains blank and if the lid is then closed the disk continues to run and it gets hotter and hotter. This can only be resolved by a forced shutdown, after which it restars properly. I have repaired permissions, the disk and reinstalled Tiger, and apparently there are no hardware problems. Had hoped that 10.4.2 would resolve this, but no joy.
Any ideas?

How are you trying to wake the computer? Have you tried pressing the power button to wake the computer? Closed and opened the lid multiple times? Made sure the power was plugged in?

Thanks for your prompt reply - yes I have tried all of your suggestions, without success. The problem still persists.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to open terminal and try typing: pmset -a lidwake 1
Put your computer to sleep and see if it wakes back up when you open the lid. Then, Leave it on all night and see if it still responds.
I suppose adjusting the brightness after you wake it up doesn't do anything? (probably a stupid question, but sometimes it's odd small things)

Tried pmset -a lidwake 1 and no joy. However, I have noticed that it wakes up properly when running on battery, but not when connected to the power unit. Does this suggest that there is a hardware problem that was undetected by the diagnostic check, or does anything else spring to mind?

Could be a hardware problem... You could try pmset -c lidwake 1 which tells the computer to wake when the lid is opened and a charger is connected. I'd take it to get checked out by a tech hardware wise just to be safe. Did this happen with previous versions of the OS, or just immediately after you installed Tiger?

pmset -c lidwake 1 didn't make any difference. The problem arose immediately after installing Tiger - perhaps this is coincidental. If it is a hardware problem, do you have any thoughts about where it might be? I had a new logic board fitted no long before (at great expence) hope its nothing as major as that!

Try rebooting holding CMD+OPT+O+F then typing: reset-all
Then type: mac-boot
See if that clears up anything for you?
I very much doubt it's a hardware problem because:
1) It happened after you installed Tiger
2) It works without the charger connected
It could be a hardware problem, however I haven't heard of before.

I'm sorry, but that didn't have any effect either. There are quite a lot of reports of sleep problems of various types on the Apple discussion site, for which there seems to be no solution. If you have any further thoughts I should be very pleased to hear from you.
Thanks for your efforts to date.
