I have four Mac systems, all running OSX 10.4.1. They are all configured to check daily for software updates. While the Mac Mini shows that it checks daily, it does not seem to be alerting of any updates. Manually checking last night showed three updates, Security Update 2005-006, iTunes 4.9 and DVD Playback Update 4.6.1. The other three Macs are up-to-date.

Is this a known issue with Software Update? Should I try deleting the prefrences files?

Lou,

Software Update works with the Receipts folder in Hard Drive>Library>Receipts.
So if there is no receipt package for iTunes, it will not pull an alert. I realize that this may not be your situation.

Go to System Preferences>Software Update. Uncheck the Check for updates. close the window. Now go back and check the box and make your selection as to how frequently you want it to check.

Now click on Check now. You may be told there are no updates. Before you click on the okay button, go to the System Preferences Menu and select Reset Ignored Updates.

Now when it goes through the check it should alert you.

Thanks, Cheryl, for your quick response... I have tried turning updating off and back on as you suggested. In the second half of your message you suggest:

"Now click on Check now. You may be told there are no updates. Before you click on the okay button, go to the System Preferences Menu and select Reset Ignored Updates."

After it says there are no updates, there is no "Okay", nor is there anything in the system preferences menu other than:

About System Preferences
Services > (No mention of resetting anything here, either)
Hide System Preferences
Hide Others
Show All
Quit System Preferences

Am I missing something? I guess we'll find out the next time there's an update (Your message missed today's iSync update by about an hour...) Thanks again for your suggestions.

Lou,

I am sorry, I thought you could reset the ignored updates even though there were no updates.

Funny, I ran Software Update to get the steps and that's when I got the iSync update.

Hopefully, now that your up to date, that System Update will work properly.

There is a Software Update Cache folder in Hard Drive>Library>Caches.

Open that and you should see swcdn.apple.com. Open that to Content . then open Downloads. You now should see several folders named with numbers. Trash them all. Empty the trash.

There is the same thing in Home>Library>Caches.

Emptying the cache and emptying the trash should help also.

Lou,

There is an update release. The best time to check to see if that troubled computer is fixed.

I guess we'll know within 24 hours if it worked or not... (Since it's set to check Daily, but I checked manually only a few hours ago.)

Rats! Software Update control panel says that it sucessfully ran 7/13/05 at 7:22 pm, but it did not report the 10.4.2 update being available. If I say "Check Now", it finds both the 10.4.2 update AND the new iPhoto 5.0.3 update. Looks like it didn't work.

Any OTHER ideas? Or should I just get used to having to make sure and check manually whenever the other three Macs report an update as being available...?

Lou,

Periodically I have to do a manual check, but if I leave it, it will eventually do a catch up within a weeks time.

I really would not worry about this, since your other machines do update automatically, which will give you a heads up.

While it is an inconvenience, it is a minor one. Rather than check daily, set it to weekly. Apple does not have updates so often to have it check daily.
