Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerMac 7300/200
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
Am having a strange problem with my floppy drive. It seems to recognize only disks that it has written. It freezes on 3rd party disks and even blanks.

On its own disks it works fine and does all that it should. On "foreign" disks, with Norton Disk light installed, the access floppy symbol shows up, but everything stops there — I have to use the paper clip eject method.

The computer is otherwise working fine. Because the problem is not consistent, I hoping some software got corrupted, rather than having hardware be the source.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Peter and welcome to No Wonder!

If you have RAM Doubler installed, upgrade it to the most recent version.

Any change with extensions off?

I have seen this problem before - it is caused by the read/write heads becoming slightly misaligned which means it only recognises certain disks. Since the misaligned heads have written to the disk, the same heads can then read it again.
Disks not used in the drive before will not work...although some will.

I think it is time to get the floppy drive replaced.

You could try using a floppy drive cleaner...but this is a long shot.

Cheers
Andy Mitchell
